Taxonomy & naming

Yunnanilus analis was described by Yang in 1990. It sits in the genus Yunnanilus, a large assemblage of small nemacheilid loaches named for Yunnan province, the heart of their distribution in the karst lake country of southeastern China. The genus has been reshuffled repeatedly as older, broader groupings such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart through the 20th and 21st centuries, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination, Yunnanilus analis, in the family Nemacheilidae.

Nemacheilidae is the largest of the loach families by species count, encompassing the small "stone" and "brook" loaches spread across Eurasia. Within that family, Yunnanilus is one of several genera — alongside Schistura, Triplophysa and others — that has diversified intensively in the isolated karst lakes and streams of the Yun-Gui Plateau, often producing narrow-range endemics restricted to a single lake or drainage, exactly the pattern seen in this species.
