Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus bajiangensis was described by W. X. Li in 2004, with its type locality in the Bajiang River, Shilin County, Yunnan, China — the river that gives the species its epithet. It was placed in Yunnanilus, a genus erected for the small stone loaches of southeastern China, and specifically in the nigromaculatus species group, a cluster of closely related Yunnanilus recognised by shared morphological features.
More recent taxonomic work has proposed moving this species into the genus Eonemachilus, part of the broader reshuffling that has affected the old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex across Cobitoidea in recent decades. Per this atlas's editorial convention it is retained here under the original combination, Yunnanilus bajiangensis, pending clearer resolution. The family placement, Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches, the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea — is not in dispute.
Morphology
Yunnanilus bajiangensis is a small loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2.5 in standard length. Meristic data place its dorsal fin at 12 soft rays and its anal fin at 7 to 8 soft rays, figures typical for the genus. Like other nemacheilids it has an elongated, cylindrical body suited to holding position in flowing water, a small underslung mouth for picking food from the substrate, and the near-scaleless or reduced-scale skin characteristic of the family.
