Taxonomy & naming
Yunnanilus beipanjiangensis was described by Li, Mao & Sun in 1994. The species epithet refers directly to its type locality, the Beipan River (Beipanjiang), a tributary system in the upper Pearl (Zhu) River drainage of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in southeastern China.
It belongs to the genus Yunnanilus, a large assemblage of small stone loaches within the family Nemacheilidae — itself the largest of the loach families, comprising hundreds of species of slender, bottom-dwelling stream fish across Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the currently accepted combination, Yunnanilus beipanjiangensis; nothing in the available sources indicates the species has ever stood under a different genus.
Morphology
Yunnanilus beipanjiangensis is a small, slender-bodied loach, reported by FishBase to reach about 3 in standard length — modest even by the standards of this genus of diminutive stream fish. Like other nemacheilids it has a low, elongate profile suited to holding position on the streambed in current, a pointed head, and a body that is essentially naked — Nemacheilidae as a family lack the heavy scaling seen in some other loach groups, and this species' skin is recorded as scaleless.
Meristic detail from the taxonomic literature gives 7–8 dorsal soft rays and 39 vertebrae, figures used to distinguish it from closely related Yunnanilus species in formal keys. Habitat
The species is known from the Beipan River system in Yunnan, China, part of the upper Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) basin — a network of clear, flowing streams and rivers in the hilly terrain of southeastern China. As a benthic nemacheilid, it is expected to occupy the kind of cool-to-mild, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water typical of the genus: rocky or gravel-bottomed reaches where current keeps the water clear and oxygen-rich.
