Taxonomy & naming
Acestrorhynchus altus was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Naércio Menezes in 1969. It belongs to the family Acestrorhynchidae — the pike characins — a group that was long treated as a subfamily of Characidae before being split out as its own family, a change reflected in the modern Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treatment of the genus. Acestrorhynchus altus is one of roughly fifteen recognised species in the genus, all sharing the elongated, pike-like body plan and predatory dentition that gives the group its common names of pike characin, freshwater barracuda or (for some species) payara-adjacent forms — though the true payara belongs to the related genus Hydrolycus, not Acestrorhynchus.
The type locality is the Rio Arari at Cachoeira do Arari on Ilha de Marajó, Pará State, Brazil — the large island at the mouth of the Amazon — and the species is otherwise recorded from the wider Amazon River basin. Identification within Acestrorhynchus rests on fin-ray counts, scale counts and subtle proportional measurements, and species-level records for the genus are easy to confuse in older literature; treat range and abundance figures for A. altus specifically with some caution.
Morphology
Like the rest of its genus, Acestrorhynchus altus has an unmistakable silhouette: a long, cylindrical, laterally compressed body, a pointed head with a protruding lower jaw, and large eyes set forward for judging the distance to fleeing prey. The mouth is lined with sharp, well-developed teeth adapted for gripping and slashing rather than crushing, and the dorsal and adipose fins sit well back toward the tail, concentrating propulsive power in a deep caudal peduncle built for a sudden burst of speed. FishBase records a maximum size of 9 in standard length, making A. altus one of the smaller members of a genus whose larger relatives can exceed 15.5 in.
Colouration is countershaded and cryptic rather than showy: a silvery body, a darker dorsal surface, and — in many Acestrorhynchus species — a dark stripe or spot running along the flank toward the caudal peduncle, sometimes picked out with red or orange in the tail, which is likely the basis for the trade name "red-tail barracuda." The overall build telegraphs its ecology: this is a fish shaped for a fast strike over a short distance, not for cruising.
Habitat
Acestrorhynchus altus is known from the Amazon River basin, with its type locality on Ilha de Marajó at the river's Atlantic mouth. FishBase records a pH range of 5.5–7.2 for the species, and Seriously Fish gives a fuller habitat picture for the genus consistent with these figures: warm water around 72–82 °F, pH roughly 6.0–7.5, and moderate hardness in the range of 18–215 ppm, spanning both softer blackwater-influenced tributaries and more mineral-rich whitewater stretches typical of the lower Amazon.
As an open-water pursuit predator, A. altus is associated with the main channels and larger tributaries of its basin rather than densely vegetated backwaters, where its long body and speed-built physiology have room to work. Precise distribution data beyond the type locality and general Amazon-basin records are sparse, consistent with its Data Deficient conservation status.
Feeding
Acestrorhynchus altus is an obligate piscivore — Seriously Fish is explicit that it feeds exclusively on fish in the wild, using its speed and dentition to run down and seize smaller fish in open water rather than ambushing from cover. This is not a species that supplements its diet with insects, fruit or plant matter; fish is effectively the entire menu.
In the aquarium this translates into a genuinely difficult feeding problem: newly imported individuals often refuse anything but live fish, and while many keepers manage to wean established specimens onto dead fish, prawn or other meaty foods, dry or pelleted foods are typically ignored altogether. Anyone taking this species on should be prepared to source a reliable supply of appropriately sized feeder or frozen fish rather than expecting it to adapt to standard aquarium fare.
Mating
Little species-specific detail on courtship behaviour in Acestrorhynchus altus has been documented in the sources available. What is known for the genus and for pike characins generally is that they are open-water spawners rather than substrate nesters or nest builders, with no evidence of pair bonding, territorial defence of a spawning site, or courtship display comparable to the piranhas and silver dollars of the same order. Data are sparse enough that no reliable account of sex differences, spawning triggers or seasonal timing can be given for this species specifically.
Breeding
As a big-river pursuit predator, Acestrorhynchus altus fits the pattern documented for pike characins, payaras and other open-water Amazonian predators: spawning, where it has been observed at all in related species, takes place in open water with eggs scattered and no parental care, and captive breeding has not been achieved or reported. Seriously Fish states plainly that breeding this species in captivity remains exceptionally difficult and has not been accomplished by hobbyists.
There is no aquaculture or commercial breeding programme for this species, unlike the pacus and some of the larger migratory characins of the same order. Anyone acquiring A. altus should expect to be keeping a wild-collected fish, and should not expect any prospect of home breeding.
In the aquarium
Acestrorhynchus altus is a specialist fish for an experienced keeper, not a casual community addition. At a modest maximum of roughly 9 in it is smaller than many of its relatives, but it retains the genus's defining temperament: nervous, highly strung and prone to bolting when startled, with thin, easily damaged skin that makes it prone to snout and body injuries if kept in a tank without a long, unobstructed swimming lane. It should never be introduced to an immature or newly cycled tank, and sudden movements, bright lighting or a cramped aquascape can trigger panicked dashes into the glass or hardscape.
Because it is an obligate piscivore, every tankmate must be either too large to be swallowed or robust and fast enough to avoid becoming prey — this is not a fish that can be safely mixed with typical community species. Water should be kept warm (around 72–82 °F, matching Aqua-Fish's cited range of roughly 79–82 °F) and mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6–7.2), with efficient, stable filtration; the species is noted as sensitive to organic buildup and swings in water chemistry, so a mature, well-established system with minimal disturbance is essential. Best kept singly or in a species tank rather than mixed with anything it might view as prey.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Acestrorhynchus altus as Data Deficient in its most recent evaluation (7 November 2018), meaning there is not enough information on its population size, trend or distribution to assign a threat category. This is a common status for narrowly documented Amazonian characins that lack targeted fishery or population studies, and it should not be read as evidence the species is either secure or at risk — simply that the data do not yet exist to say.
No species-specific threats are documented in the sources reviewed here. Given its Amazon basin distribution, the general pressures facing the region's freshwater fish — habitat alteration, damming and water-quality change in heavily developed stretches — are plausible long-term considerations, but no assessment of their impact on this particular species is available.
