Acestrorhynchus abbreviatus was described by the American palaeontologist and naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1878, one of many South American characins Cope named from museum material collected during the nineteenth century. It sits in the genus Acestrorhynchus, a group of elongated predatory characins historically placed in Characidae but now generally recognised, following the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), in its own family, Acestrorhynchidae — the pike characins or freshwater barracudas, a lineage of streamlined, big-mouthed ambush-and-pursuit predators distinct from the deep-bodied piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae.
