Acestrorhynchus falcirostris is a torpedo-shaped predator of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, built along the same lines as the true payara: a long, laterally compact body, a sickle-shaped upper jaw (the source of its species name) and a mouth full of needle teeth adapted for seizing fish in open water. It is not a piranha and does not act like one — there is no nipping or scavenging here, only fast, direct pursuit of live prey in the open water of large rivers. In the aquarium it is a specialist's fish: skittish, prone to jumping, intolerant of cramped quarters, and unwilling to accept anything but meaty, fish-based food, which makes it a poor match for the vast majority of home setups despite its striking, streamlined good looks.

Taxonomy & naming

Acestrorhynchus falcirostris was described by Georges Cuvier in 1819. It belongs to the family Acestrorhynchidae, a group of slender, pike-like predatory characins that was long treated as a subfamily of Characidae before being elevated to full family rank; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Acestrorhynchidae as a distinct family within Characiformes, with Acestrorhynchus as its principal genus of some fifteen valid species.

The genus name Acestrorhynchus derives from Greek roots meaning "hook" and "snout," a direct reference to the sickle-shaped curve of the upper jaw that is diagnostic of the genus; the species epithet falcirostris reinforces the same idea, from the Latin falx (sickle) and rostrum (snout, beak). Members of this genus are informally grouped in the hobby and trade with the larger payara (Hydrolycus) and other pike-jawed characins under names like "freshwater barracuda" or "pike characin," though Acestrorhynchus is a separate and generally smaller-bodied lineage from true Hydrolycus payaras.

Morphology

The body is elongated, laterally compressed and torpedo-shaped, built for sustained fast swimming in open water rather than for manoeuvring around cover. The head is pointed, with the diagnostic sickle-curved upper jaw and a row of sharp, closely spaced teeth suited to gripping slippery, fast-moving fish prey rather than shearing flesh. FishBase records a maximum size of 17.5 in standard length, with SeriouslyFish citing wild specimens in the 12.5–14 in range as more typical — either way this is a substantially larger fish than most community characins, and one that never stops looking lean and predatory.

Juveniles carry two dark longitudinal stripes running the length of the body, a pattern that fades as the fish matures; adults instead show a dark fringe along the edge of the gill cover (the opercular margin), a useful field mark for separating grown individuals from confusingly similar congeners in the same genus. The fins are set well back on the body, consistent with a fish that relies on acceleration from the rear half of the body for its predatory strikes.

Habitat

Acestrorhynchus falcirostris is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins and the rivers of Guyana, where it occupies open water in the main channels and larger tributaries of these lowland freshwater systems. FishBase describes it as freshwater and benthopelagic, meaning it ranges through open water rather than hugging the bottom or hiding among structure — consistent with its build as a pursuit predator that needs room to accelerate rather than an ambush specialist that relies on cover.

Water conditions across its range run pH 5.2–7.2 and temperature 75–82 °F per FishBase, with SeriouslyFish citing a slightly broader temperature window of 72–82 °F and pH 6.0–7.5 — in practice, warm, soft-to-neutral, mildly acidic South American river water, without the need to replicate extreme blackwater conditions. Its open-water habit means it is a species of large, actively flowing rivers rather than still floodplain lakes or small forest streams.

Feeding

This is an obligate piscivore — an active pursuit predator that feeds on live or freshly killed fish in the wild, and the aquarium literature is consistent that it is a genuinely difficult fish to feed on anything else. Cached hobby sources describe a diet of finfish, shrimp and insects, typically offered every other day rather than daily, reflecting the boom-and-bust feeding rhythm of a large-river ambush-and-chase predator.

Any tankmate must be too large to be swallowed whole, since this species will treat anything that fits in its mouth as prey; SeriouslyFish notes that adults become "relatively peaceful with anything too large to swallow," which is a low bar rather than a guarantee of easy community compatibility. Weaning individuals onto dead or prepared foods is reported as difficult and not always successful, and this feeding rigidity is one of the main reasons the species is considered a specialist rather than a beginner fish.

Mating

No courtship or pair-formation behaviour for Acestrorhynchus falcirostris is documented in the cached sources, and none could be added without guessing. As a large-river, open-water species there is no evidence of the site-clearing, territorial pairing seen in substrate-spawning characins such as the true piranhas; what little is known about reproduction in this genus points to broadcast spawning tied to river conditions rather than to a distinct courtship display, but that is inference from the wider family rather than a documented account for this species specifically.

Breeding

Acestrorhynchus falcirostris is, by every account available, not bred in captivity. Cached aquarium-care sources are explicit that it is a wild river spawner with no established aquarium or commercial breeding protocol, placing it alongside the true payara (Hydrolycus) and other big-river pursuit predators whose reproduction depends on long-distance migration and open-river spawning conditions that cannot be replicated in a home aquarium or even most public-aquarium systems.

Every individual in the trade is therefore wild-collected, which has knock-on implications for both husbandry — wild-caught adults tend to be more highly strung and harder to settle than farm-raised fish — and for the honesty required of any care guide: this is not a species a keeper should expect, or attempt, to spawn at home.

In the aquarium

This is a specialist fish, not a community-tank centrepiece, and the cached care sources are unusually blunt about it. At a confirmed maximum of roughly 17.5 in, it needs a genuinely large footprint — SeriouslyFish specifies a minimum base of 250 × 35.5 in, and other sources cite 250 × 39.5 in and 600+ litres — because it is an open-water swimmer that stresses and injures itself in cramped or heavily furnished tanks; excess cover and clutter work against this species rather than for it, the opposite of most nervous characins.

Juveniles are described as needing to be kept in a school of four or more to settle, while adults become more solitary; it is also flagged as the most skittish species within its own genus and a notorious jumper, so a secure, weighted lid is mandatory rather than optional. Filtration needs to handle a heavy bioload from a large, messy piscivore — sources suggest turnover of four to five times tank volume — and, per Feeding, tankmates must be large, fast, and ideally other big open-water fish rather than anything that could be mistaken for a meal. This combination of size, temperament and dietary rigidity makes it a fish for experienced keepers with genuinely large systems, not a novelty purchase for a standard tank.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Acestrorhynchus falcirostris as Least Concern, an assessment dated February 2020 that reflects its wide distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco basins and the rivers of Guyana, with no immediate conservation threats recorded across that range. It is not a species propped up by aquaculture or captive breeding in the way some other trade fish are — as noted above, the entire aquarium supply is wild-collected — but its broad natural range and lack of documented population decline mean that collection for the trade is not currently flagged as a conservation concern.

As with many large-river Amazonian and Orinoco fish, the longer-term watch items are basin-wide pressures — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — rather than any threat specific to this species, and none of the cached sources report population decline attributable to those pressures at this time.
