Taxonomy & naming
Ammocryptocharax vintonae was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, based on material collected in British Guiana (present-day Guyana). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) confirms Eigenmann's authorship and the species' placement in the small genus Ammocryptocharax, within the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin tetras, a characiform lineage distinct from the pacus and true piranhas that dominate this section of the atlas.
The genus name is built from Greek roots referring to sand-dwelling habits, fitting for a fish that rests on sandy and leaf-littered river bottoms rather than swimming freely in the water column. The species epithet vintonae honours a Mrs. C. Vinton, whom Eigenmann credited in his original description as one of the few women who had visited the habitat where the type material was collected in British Guiana.
Morphology
Ammocryptocharax vintonae is a small, slender characin, reaching a maximum recorded size of about 3.5 in standard length, with many individuals considerably smaller — some accounts put typical adult size closer to 1.5–3.5 in. Like other crenuchid darters, its body plan favours a life spent perched on or near the substrate rather than cruising in open water: a streamlined, somewhat compressed shape suited to short, quick darting movements between resting points.
Detailed morphological description in the popular literature is sparse for this species; it is best understood through its family placement. Crenuchidae as a whole is characterised by this darter-and-perch lifestyle, and Ammocryptocharax vintonae's body form is consistent with the genus's specialisation for holding station near the bottom in flowing water.
Habitat
The species is documented from the Potaro River and Mazaruni River systems and the Uiaren River — a tributary of the Caroní River in the Orinoco basin — spanning parts of Guyana and Venezuela on the Guiana Shield. It occupies freshwater, benthopelagic habitat in shallow rivers, holding close to sand, leaf litter and other bottom structure rather than the open water column.
FishBase records water conditions of roughly 73–81 °F, pH 6.0–7.0 and low hardness (0–10 dH), consistent with the soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral clear and blackwater streams typical of the Guiana Shield. These are stable, well-oxygenated lowland tropical rivers rather than the extreme blackwater conditions associated with some other Guiana Shield fishes; some hobby sources note that finer aquarium parameters for the species are still not fully documented.
Feeding
Ammocryptocharax vintonae is a micro-predator with a trophic level (3.6 on FishBase) consistent with a carnivorous diet of small invertebrates rather than fish or plant matter. Hobby sources describe it hunting small insects and plankton, effectively filtering prey items out of the water column and substrate near its resting spot rather than actively chasing larger prey.
In practical terms this places it with the many small Neotropical characins that will readily ignore flake food: a fish this size and this specialised needs tiny live or frozen foods — microworm, baby brine shrimp, cyclops and similarly sized invertebrate prey — to thrive, following the pattern typical of nano-scale crenuchids.
Mating
No detailed courtship description for Ammocryptocharax vintonae specifically was found in the sources consulted. Hobby accounts describe the species as gregarious, living in loose groups in shallow rivers, which suggests social structure plays some role in pairing, but data on courtship behaviour, sexing, or dimorphism for this species specifically is sparse.
Within Crenuchidae more broadly, the darters of genera such as Crenuchus and Poecilocharax are known cave- or leaf-spawners with brief male care of the clutch, and Characidium darters are egg-scatterers. Ammocryptocharax is closely allied with this darter group, but confirmed breeding behaviour specific to A. vintonae has not been documented in available sources — data sparse.
Breeding
There are no confirmed aquarium or field breeding accounts for Ammocryptocharax vintonae in the sources consulted. Unlike its better-known crenuchid relatives — the sailfin characins (Crenuchus spilurus, Poecilocharax spp.), which are documented cave- or leaf-spawners with the male briefly guarding the clutch — this species has no established breeding record in the hobby, and it is not a species that is commercially propagated.
Given its close relationship to other darter-type crenuchids, a similar brief-male-care spawning mode is plausible, but this would be inference rather than documented fact for A. vintonae itself. It is honest to say breeding data for this species is sparse to nonexistent rather than to assign it a confirmed mode.
In the aquarium
Ammocryptocharax vintonae is essentially unknown in the mainstream aquarium trade — it does not appear as a regularly available species, and most of what little hobby information exists comes from specialist care-guide sources rather than widespread keeper experience. Where it is discussed, it is described as having a pleasant, gregarious temperament, best suited to a group in a quiet, nano-scale setup with sand or fine substrate and leaf litter to reflect its bottom-hugging habits, rather than a busy community tank.
As a micro-predator, feeding is the main practical challenge: it needs small live or frozen invertebrate foods rather than flake, and tankmates should be limited to other small, peaceful species that will not outcompete it at feeding time or view it as prey. Water should be kept warm, soft and mildly acidic to neutral, matching its native Guiana Shield rivers; several parameters cited in hobby sources are still described as provisional, so a cautious, stable setup is safer than assuming wide tolerance.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Ammocryptocharax vintonae as Least Concern as of 28 October 2020, with low vulnerability to fishing pressure. This reflects its distribution across multiple river systems on the Guiana Shield — the Potaro, Mazaruni and Uiaren/Caroní drainages — an area with comparatively low human disturbance relative to much of South America, rather than any direct abundance survey most keepers would recognise.
One hobby source describes the species as threatened by habitat loss in part of its range, which is worth noting even though it sits alongside the formal Least Concern assessment; as with many small, poorly studied Guiana Shield fishes, the gap between a broad-range IUCN status and fine-grained, site-specific pressure is real. The species is not a target of commercial collection for the aquarium trade, so trade pressure is not considered a factor in its conservation status.
