Ammocryptocharax elegans was described by Stanley H. Weitzman and Royal D. Kanazawa in 1976, the type species of the genus Ammocryptocharax within the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters, a family split from the wider characin assemblage on the basis of features including an unbranched lateral line and distinctive lower jaw dentition. Crenuchidae includes the better-known aquarium sailfin characins (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax) as well as the stream-bed darters of Characidium and the smaller genera Ammocryptocharax, Elachocharax and Melanocharacidium, all of which share a bottom-perching, darting mode of life rather than continuous open-water swimming.
The genus name combines Greek and Latin elements referring to a sand-dwelling characin, and the species epithet elegans (Latin, "elegant") reflects the fish's slender, neatly marked body. As with several of its close relatives, A. elegans is a genuinely obscure species outside specialist and scientific circles — the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference for its accepted name and synonymy, and no reliable common name beyond a literal rendering ("elegant sand darter") is established in the hobby.
Morphology
Ammocryptocharax elegans is a genuinely tiny characin, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of only 1.5 in — nano scale even by the standards of small tetras, and dwarfed entirely by the piranhas and pacus that dominate the rest of this family group. As a small-mouthed, bottom-perching darter, Ammocryptocharax elegans is best understood as a micro-predator that takes tiny invertebrates from the substrate and drift rather than grazing or filtering.
