Belonophago hutsebouti is a small, needle-jawed characin from the middle Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it belongs to one of the aquarium hobby's least publicised but most genuinely hazardous feeding guilds: the pterygophages, or fin-eaters. Reaching only about 3.5 in, it is not remotely a piranha-scale predator, but its elongate, needlefish-like jaw is a specialised tool for rasping fins and scales from other fish rather than a general-purpose mouth, and that single fact should govern almost every decision a keeper makes about it.
