Taxonomy & naming
Clarias hilli was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1936. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large African and Asian genus whose members share an accessory air-breathing organ and the ability to survive out of water for extended periods. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes carry it under this combination, with no indication of a historical shift out of Clarias.
As with many lesser-known Clarias species, C. hilli has attracted little taxonomic attention beyond its original description and subsequent distributional records; it is not one of the handful of Clarias species that dominate the aquarium trade or the walking-catfish literature, so detailed revisionary work is sparse.
Morphology
Clarias hilli reaches a maximum recorded size of about 7.5 in total length, small for the genus, which includes species that grow well over a metre. Like other clariids it has an elongated, cylindrical body, a broad flattened head, four pairs of barbels around the mouth, and long dorsal and anal fins that run much of the body's length without dorsal spines. FishBase records a dorsal-spine count of zero for this species, consistent with the smooth-rayed dorsal fin typical of Clarias.
The pectoral fins carry a slightly curved spine with strong downward-facing serrations along its edge — a functional weapon that can lock erect and lodge painfully in a net or an unwary hand. The skin is naked and scaleless, as in all clariids, which leaves the fish more exposed to abrasion and more sensitive to certain medications than scaled fishes.
Habitat
Clarias hilli is native to central Africa, recorded from the middle Congo River basin, the Lake Albert system, the Malagarasi basin and the lower Lualaba River. This spans a range of moving-water and lake-margin habitats typical of African walking catfishes — slow reaches, floodplain margins and swampy backwaters where dissolved oxygen can run low.
As a facultative air-breather, C. hilli is well adapted to exactly these oxygen-poor waters: it can gulp air at the surface using an accessory breathing organ and tolerate conditions that would stress a purely gill-breathing fish. Specific water-chemistry data for this species has not been documented in the literature consulted; central African Congo-basin waters it shares its range with are typically warm and can range from soft and acidic in forest streams to more mineral-rich in lake-margin habitats, but this should not be assumed without direct confirmation for C. hilli itself.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Clarias hilli specifically has not been documented in the sources consulted. Clarias as a genus are opportunistic omnivores to predators, taking invertebrates, small fish, detritus and plant matter as available, and there is no reason to expect this species differs sharply from that pattern given its habitat in floodplain and lake-margin waters.
In the rare cases it is kept, a Clarias of this size should be offered sinking pellets, and meaty foods such as chopped fish, prawn and earthworm, in quantities matched to its appetite; like its relatives it is likely to accept a wide range of foods without fuss.
Mating
No specific account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Clarias hilli has been documented in the sources consulted; the species is essentially unknown in captivity, and field observations of its reproductive behaviour do not appear in the available literature. Data on this species is sparse rather than fabricated here.
Breeding
There is no record of Clarias hilli being bred in the home aquarium, and none should be expected. Commercially important Clarias species (such as C. gariepinus and C. batrachus) are propagated at farm scale using hormone-induced spawning to supply food-fish aquaculture, not through natural pairing in a tank; C. hilli, being a small, obscure, non-food-fish species with almost no aquarium presence, has no documented breeding programme at all, hobbyist or commercial. Anyone encountering this species should treat it as effectively unbred in captivity rather than assume a bubble-nest, cave-spawning or scatter-spawning mode it has no evidence for.
In the aquarium
Clarias hilli is very rarely kept, and there is little hobby literature to draw on for husbandry specifics. What can be said with confidence follows from its genus and family. First, respect the real adult size: at up to 7.5 in total length it is far smaller than giant Clarias like C. gariepinus, but it is still not a fish for a small tank, and any Clarias sold as a small juvenile should be assumed capable of reaching its documented maximum. Second, it is a naked, scaleless catfish, so dose copper and many medications conservatively, as with loaches and other scaleless fishes. Third, it carries a stiff, serrated, locking pectoral spine that can snag a net and jab the handler — move it in a container rather than netting it. Fourth, as a facultative air-breather it needs unobstructed access to the surface to gulp air, so avoid tightly sealed tanks or dense floating cover across the whole surface. Given its obscurity in the trade, anyone acquiring this species should confirm its identity carefully and be prepared for a fish with essentially undocumented aquarium requirements. As with all Clarias, it should never be released into local waterways; the genus is a well-known invasive risk outside its native range.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias hilli as Least Concern, with the most recent assessment dated 2020. It is described as a relatively uncommon species in the trade, occupying a range across the middle Congo basin, the Lake Albert system, the Malagarasi basin and the lower Lualaba — a broad enough distribution across several African drainage systems to support the Least Concern rating.
As with many small, non-commercial African catfishes, C. hilli is not a focus of targeted conservation attention, and localized pressures such as habitat degradation or water quality changes within its component river systems are not well documented for this species specifically.
