Taxonomy & naming
Boulengerella lateristriga was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1895, and the genus Boulengerella itself was later erected in his honour — a double naming credit that recognises Boulenger's extensive work cataloguing South American freshwater fishes for the British Museum. The species belongs to the family Ctenoluciidae, the pike characins, a small Neotropical family of elongated, predatory characiforms often called "freshwater barracudas" or "pike characins" for their superficial resemblance to true pikes and barracudas — a case of convergent evolution rather than any close relationship.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Boulengerella lateristriga as a valid species within a genus of roughly half a dozen similar pike characins distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco and Guiana river systems. It is frequently confused in the trade with its close relatives, particularly B. maculata and B. cuvieri, and reliable identification rests on the pattern and continuity of the dark lateral stripe and the specific placement of dark blotches along the flank, both of which are the species' defining field marks.
Morphology
The striped pike characin has an extremely elongated, cylindrical, torpedo-shaped body built for rapid acceleration in open water, with a long, pointed snout and a lower jaw studded with fine, sharp teeth adapted for gripping small fish rather than shearing flesh. FishBase records a maximum size of 10 in standard length, making this one of the smaller members of its genus compared to the much larger payara-type predators in related families, though it is still a substantial, fast-swimming fish that needs real length of tank to turn and cruise.
The common name comes directly from the fish's most obvious field mark: a bold, continuous dark stripe running from behind the eye to the base of the tail, set against a silvery-olive body, with additional dark blotching along the flank in some individuals. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins sit far back on the body, close to the tail, which is typical of ambush-and-dash predators built for a single burst of acceleration rather than sustained cruising. The skin and scales are notably delicate for the fish's size, and specimens are easily damaged by rough handling, tight nets or collisions with tank glass or decor during a startled dash.
Habitat
Boulengerella lateristriga is native to the Rio Negro basin of Brazil and Colombia and the upper Río Orinoco of Venezuela, with its type locality at Manaus, Brazil, where the blackwater Rio Negro meets the whitewater Amazon. Blackwater rivers of this basin are characteristically tannin-stained, nutrient-poor and strongly acidic, coloured tea-brown by dissolved organic matter leaching from surrounding forest and with very little dissolved mineral content.
FishBase records a natural temperature range of roughly 73–81 °F with pH around 5.2–6.8, while other sources describing the wider Rio Negro blackwater environment note conditions running considerably more acidic, down toward pH 3.0–4.0 in the most extreme tannin-stained tributaries. In the aquarium the species does best in warm water in the low-to-mid twenties through high twenties Celsius, softer and more acidic than neutral tap water, with strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen and open swimming space — this is a pelagic, mid-to-upper-water fish of large rivers, not a sluggish bottom-dweller, and cramped or stagnant conditions are poorly tolerated.
Feeding
Boulengerella lateristriga is an obligate piscivore in the wild, hunting small fish and taking insects from the water's surface and near-surface zone using its long, tooth-lined jaws. It is not an opportunistic scavenger in the way piranhas are; it is a dedicated pursuit predator that relies on speed and a straight strike rather than ambush from cover.
In the aquarium it typically needs weaning onto prepared foods, and even conditioned specimens can be reluctant on dry pellets. A varied diet of bloodworms, chopped earthworms, chopped prawn, fish strips and live foods such as crickets is well tolerated; keepers are cautioned against relying on fatty mammalian or avian meat, which is nutritionally inappropriate for a lean river predator of this kind. Every tankmate must be too large to be swallowed whole — this species will eat any fish it can fit in its jaws, and its feeding drive does not discriminate between "dither fish" and prey.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for Boulengerella lateristriga in the aquarium literature consulted for this profile, and the species is not known to have been bred or even to have shown pre-spawning behaviour in captivity. As a big-river pelagic predator, it most likely relies on seasonal cues tied to Amazonian and Orinoco flood-pulse hydrology to trigger any migratory or spawning behaviour in the wild, in line with many other large-river Neotropical characins, but this has not been specifically documented for the species and should not be treated as confirmed.
Breeding
Captive breeding of Boulengerella lateristriga is not established. As a pike characin of large, open blackwater rivers, this species falls into the same category as payara, freshwater barracudas and other pike characins whose reproduction depends on the scale and seasonal dynamics of a big river system — conditions that cannot be replicated in a home aquarium. Aquarium specimens in the trade are wild-collected rather than captive-bred, and there are no verified hobbyist or commercial spawning reports for this species. Anyone encountering claims of home-bred fry for this genus should treat them with considerable skepticism absent documented evidence.
In the aquarium
This is a specialist fish for an experienced keeper, not a casual centrepiece purchase. Boulengerella lateristriga needs a long aquarium — sources cite a minimum footprint on the order of 240 × 35.5 in (roughly 75+ gallons as an absolute floor for a single younger fish, considerably more for a settled adult) — because its hunting strategy and general behaviour depend on having real distance to accelerate and turn. A tight, secure lid is non-negotiable: this is a prodigious jumper that will clear an open top when startled, and an uncovered tank is one of the most common causes of losing this fish.
Water should be kept warm, soft and acidic to mildly acidic, with strong filtration, high dissolved oxygen and minimal sudden disturbance, since a startled fish frequently reacts by bolting into glass or décor and can split its fragile snout or otherwise injure itself. Newly acquired specimens are typically shy and skittish and need time and cover to settle; once established, the species shows minimal aggression toward tankmates of a similar size that it cannot swallow, and juveniles are reported to school loosely. Given the difficulty of housing, feeding and keeping this fish calm, and the total absence of captive breeding, it remains a wild-collected import best suited to spacious, specialist setups rather than general community tanks.
Conservation
Boulengerella lateristriga is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting its relatively wide distribution across the Rio Negro and upper Orinoco basins and the absence of documented major population declines. It is used commercially in regional fisheries and appears in the public aquarium trade in addition to the hobbyist trade, and it does not currently carry any specific conservation flags. As with other fishes of the Rio Negro and Orinoco systems, longer-term pressures such as habitat change, water-quality shifts and the cumulative effects of collection for the ornamental trade are the relevant watch items even though the species is not presently considered threatened.
