Taxonomy & naming
Bivibranchia fowleri was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1908 and placed in the genus Bivibranchia, a small group of characins within the family Hemiodontidae — the halftooths — a lineage closely related to Hemiodus and, more distantly, to the pacus and piranhas of Serrasalmidae and the silver dollars, all within the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) and Catalogue of Life both list the current combination as Bivibranchia fowleri (Steindachner, 1908), confirming the species has not been moved to another genus since its description.
The species epithet honours Henry Weed Fowler (1878–1965), the prolific American ichthyologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia who described or catalogued an enormous number of fish species over his career, including many South American freshwater fishes worked on in the early twentieth century alongside Steindachner's own output. Bivibranchia fowleri is one of several similar-looking Bivibranchia species distributed across Amazonian and Orinoco drainages, and like many of its genus-mates it is identified mainly by dentition and fine anatomical detail rather than by bold, field-obvious markings.
Morphology
Bivibranchia fowleri is a small, elongate, laterally compressed characin with the streamlined, silvery build typical of the halftooths — a body shape suited to holding position and foraging in moving water rather than dramatic bursts of speed. FishBase records a maximum length of 7.5 in total length, making this a modestly sized fish by the standards of the wider characin order and considerably smaller than its pacu and true-piranha relatives.

The species is described as freshwater and benthopelagic, meaning it lives and forages close to the riverbed while still moving through the water column, and FishBase gives a habitat range of roughly 72–82 °F and pH 5.5–7.6 — broadly warm, soft-to-neutral, mildly acidic-to-near-neutral water typical of Amazonian and Orinocan river channels, spanning both blackwater and clearer conditions across its wide range.
Feeding
FishBase assigns Bivibranchia fowleri a trophic level of 2.9, placing it as a low-level, largely non-predatory feeder rather than a true carnivore. This fits the broader pattern seen across the hemiodontids and their grazing relatives (hemiodus, curimatas and their kin), which typically browse detritus, biofilm, fine organic material and small invertebrates from the riverbed and submerged surfaces rather than pursuing fish prey.

Anyone encountering this species would effectively be working from first principles: a benthopelagic river grazer of modest size likely does best in a spacious, well-oxygenated, current-swept setup with a varied detritus- and plant-matter-inclusive diet, but this is inference from its ecology, not documented aquarium practice.
