Taxonomy & naming
Hemiodus thayeria was described by James E. Böhlke in 1955. It belongs to the genus Hemiodus, the largest genus in the family Hemiodontidae, a group of slender, streamlined characiforms restricted to South America and often called "hemiodontids" or, informally, "hemis" in the trade. GBIF (taxon key 2354899) confirms the authority as Böhlke, 1955, and the wider South American distribution of the genus.
Hemiodontidae sits within the characin superfamily alongside the pacus, silver dollars, piranhas and true tetras covered elsewhere in this atlas, but the hemiodontids are a distinct evolutionary line built around an unusual feeding posture: many species swim and graze at a head-down angle, rasping algae and detritus from submerged wood and rock with a small, underslung mouth. As with much of this genus, H. thayeria has not been the subject of a dedicated taxonomic revision since its original description, and no synonymy or name change is on record.
Morphology
Hemiodus thayeria has the classic hemiodontid silhouette: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body built for steady mid-water swimming rather than the deep-bodied profile of a piranha or pacu. FishBase records a maximum size of 3.5 in standard length, giving a total length (including the tail) of roughly 4.5 in — a genuinely small, unassuming fish next to the size extremes elsewhere in this family group.
The species is most readily identified by two features noted repeatedly by aquarium importers: a reddish tint that washes over the top of the head and along the back toward the dorsal fin, and a conspicuously large eye relative to head size, typical of a fish that forages in the dim, tannin-stained water of its native blackwater habitat. Body colour is otherwise a bright, unmarked silver typical of open-water Hemiodus species, well suited to a fast-moving shoal in clear to lightly stained water.
Habitat
The type locality for Hemiodus thayeria is the Rio Preto, in the upper Rio Aracá region of the Rio Negro drainage in the Brazilian Amazon (recorded near 0.24°N, 63.10°W). FishBase broadens the species' documented range to the Solimões, Negro and Orinoco river basins, placing it across blackwater and mixed-water tributaries of the western and northern Amazon and into the Orinoco system of Venezuela and Colombia.
Specific water-chemistry data for H. thayeria itself is sparse in the available record, but the Rio Negro drainage is characteristically warm, soft and acidic, tannin-stained blackwater, and general parameters compiled for the genus (using the related Hemiodus gracilis as a reference point) point to roughly 73–79 °F and a pH around 6 for optimal condition and reproduction. Feeding

This matches the broader feeding pattern of Hemiodus as a genus, many of which forage at a head-down angle to rasp material from submerged wood, rocks and sediment.
In the aquarium, a diet built around quality flake or small sinking pellets, blanched vegetables and occasional live or frozen micro-foods (daphnia, brine shrimp) should suit a grazing omnivore of this kind well; specific feeding trials for H. thayeria have not been published, so this guidance is extrapolated from the genus rather than drawn from a species-specific source.
Mating
FishBase's breeding note for Hemiodus thayeria records "distinct pairing" and an oviparous (egg-laying) reproductive mode, but does not elaborate on courtship behaviour, spawning triggers or site selection, and no other source in hand adds detail. At under 3.5 in SL (about 4.5 in total length), Hemiodus thayeria is a manageable, mid-sized shoaling fish rather than a species that will outgrow a reasonably sized aquarium — a welcome contrast to the pacus and large predatory characins elsewhere in this atlas. Aquarium Glaser, a commercial importer, describes it as peaceful and calm compared with other Hemiodus species, several of which have a reputation for nervous, skittish behaviour and a tendency to dash at sudden movement or bright light; H. thayeria is pitched as comparatively more settled, though it should still be kept as a proper shoal rather than singly or in a pair, consistent with the social, diurnal behaviour the Biotope Aquarium Project records for the species.
Given its Rio Negro/Orinoco blackwater origins, a tank with soft, mildly acidic water, subdued lighting, driftwood and leaf litter, and open swimming space for a fast-moving mid-water shoal will suit it best. As with most Hemiodus, precise long-term care data for this exact species is thin, so keepers should treat genus-level husbandry as a reasonable starting point rather than a guarantee.
