Chalceus epakros is a fast, silver-flanked characin from the central Amazon and Orinoco drainages, described only in 2004 when Angela Zanata and Mônica Toledo-Piza split the long-confused genus Chalceus into several distinct species. It is a member of the "minor characins" grouped loosely with the hemiodontids in the aquarium trade — none of the fin-nipping menace of a piranha, none of the bulk of a pacu, just a lean, deep-chested open-water shoaler built for sprinting at the surface after falling insects. Reaching a modest 7 in, it is a manageable, largely peaceful fish for a big, well-covered aquarium, though like its relatives it is a determined jumper and needs real swimming room and the company of its own kind.

Taxonomy & naming

Chalceus epakros was described by Angela M. Zanata and Mônica Toledo-Piza in 2004 in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, as part of a revision that broke the previously unwieldy genus Chalceus — long a dumping ground for silvery, large-scaled Amazonian characins — into several better-defined species. The type locality is the Rio Tapajós at São Luís, above Itaituba, Pará, Brazil (4°25'S, 56°10'W). The genus Chalceus is currently placed in the family Chalceidae (historically treated within Characidae or as part of a broader "Chalceinae"), a small Neotropical lineage of fast-swimming, surface-oriented characins related to, but distinct from, the hemiodontids they are often marketed alongside.

The species epithet epakros is Greek for "pointed at the end," a reference to the fish's pointed snout — a character Zanata and Toledo-Piza used to help separate it from its closest congeners. As with several Chalceus species, C. epakros is easily confused in both scientific collections and the aquarium trade with its relatives, and much of what is written about the genus in hobby literature is really drawn from the better-known Chalceus macrolepidotus; keepers should treat species-level identification with some caution unless it comes with solid locality data.

Morphology

Chalceus epakros has the classic Chalceus build: an elongated, laterally compressed, faintly deep-bodied silver fish with large, reflective scales, a small terminal-to-slightly-upturned mouth suited to picking prey from the surface, and a pointed snout that gives the species its name. FishBase records a maximum published size of 7 in total length, making it one of the more modest members of the genus — noticeably smaller than the 10 in SL reported for Chalceus macrolepidotus.

Colouration follows the genus pattern of a bright, almost mirror-like silver body that catches light as the fish moves, with a dark caudal-fin marking and variable pink-to-red suffusion in the fins in life — the basis for the trade name "pinktail chalceus" used for Chalceus species generally. As in its relatives, colour intensity and fin tone fade quickly after capture and are not a reliable field character on their own; body proportions and the pointed snout are the more dependable clues to identity.

Habitat

The species occupies a broad swath of the northern and central Amazon system: the central and lower Amazon mainstem (including the lower Rio Madeira), the middle and upper Rio Orinoco, the Essequibo River drainage of Guyana, and the Río Nanay in Peru. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic in tropical, freshwater habitat, consistent with a fish that spends much of its time in open or moderately structured water rather than dense cover.

Across this range it is a river-channel and floodplain-margin fish, likely favouring clearer, moving water over stagnant blackwater given the genus's reputation as active surface feeders on terrestrial insects — a foraging style that depends on being near overhanging riparian vegetation and open water rather than dense submerged structure. Specific water-chemistry data for C. epakros were not found in the cache; keepers should default to the moderate, warm, mildly acidic-to-neutral conditions typical of Amazon and Orinoco tributaries rather than extreme blackwater parameters.

Feeding

Wild diet data specifically for Chalceus epakros are sparse — few stomachs have been examined — but what has been recorded points to an insectivore, taking ants, wasps and other terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface, a foraging strategy shared with its better-studied relative C. macrolepidotus, which also takes aquatic crustaceans. This surface-and-midwater insect-hunting habit matches the fish's streamlined, upturned-mouth build.

In the aquarium the species is reported as readily carnivorous, taking live, frozen and freeze-dried meaty foods — prawn, mussel, clam, bloodworm and earthworm — with good appetite. There is minimal published nutritional or feeding-ecology data specific to this species, so care guidance leans on the well-documented needs of its Chalceus relatives: a varied, protein-rich diet rather than flake alone, and enough food offered at or near the surface to match its natural feeding position.

Mating

No species-specific courtship description for Chalceus epakros was found in the source material. In the closely related and better-documented Chalceus macrolepidotus, breeding in captivity is described as an egg-scattering event with no distinct pair-bonding behaviour beyond ordinary shoal interaction, and no reliable external sexual dimorphism has been documented for the genus. Given the taxonomic closeness and shared body plan, C. epakros most likely follows a similar pattern, but this should be treated as an inference from congeners rather than a confirmed observation, and sexing individual fish by eye is not considered reliable.

Breeding

Chalceus epakros is reported to breed only rarely in the aquarium, and detailed accounts are scarce. What is documented, again largely by extension from Chalceus macrolepidotus, points to an open-water egg-scatterer: a spawning pair (or group) releases eggs into open water or fine-leaved vegetation with no nest construction and no parental care, after which the adults should be removed or the eggs relocated to prevent predation. In C. macrolepidotus, clutches of roughly 2,000 eggs and fry that take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii once free-swimming have been reported; whether C. epakros matches this fecundity is not confirmed.

There is no evidence in the available sources of commercial-scale or routine hobbyist breeding of C. epakros — this is a species that reaches aquarium shops and species collections almost entirely as wild-caught stock, and captive reproduction should be considered an occasional, opportunistic event rather than an established hobby practice.

In the aquarium

At a modest maximum of 7 in, Chalceus epakros is a manageable-sized characin, but it is an active, fast-swimming surface dweller that needs a long aquarium with plenty of open water rather than a tall or heavily planted one. Like its Chalceus relatives, it is a strong and persistent jumper, and any tank housing it needs a tight, gap-free lid — this is one of the more consistent warnings across the genus. It is best kept as a shoal rather than singly; congeners show a social hierarchy in which too-small groups produce more aggression, not less, so a real group of six or more (rather than two or three) is the safer target, in as much swimming space as can reasonably be provided.

Feeding should lean toward meaty foods — prawn, mussel, bloodworm, earthworm, and quality pellet or carnivore diets — offered where the fish can take them near the surface. It should not be mixed with fish small enough to be viewed as prey, since congeners are known to take small tankmates. Given how little is confirmed specifically for this species, keepers should treat detailed husbandry parameters as an extrapolation from the genus rather than a settled protocol, and err toward generous tank size, secure lids, and shoaling company.

Conservation

Chalceus epakros is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting a wide distribution across the central and lower Amazon, the middle and upper Orinoco, the Essequibo and the Río Nanay, spanning multiple countries and drainage basins with no evidence of significant population decline. The species carries a low fishing/collection vulnerability rating on FishBase, and it does not appear to face targeted commercial pressure in the way that larger food-fish characins in this family do.

As with many Amazonian and Orinoco basin fish that are not individually monitored in detail, the broader long-term pressures on its habitat — deforestation-linked sedimentation, damming and water-quality change across its range countries — are relevant background factors even though the species itself is not currently considered threatened. Its presence in the aquarium trade appears to rely on wild collection rather than any farmed supply, though trade volumes were not documented in the available sources.
