Chalceus erythrurus was described by the American palaeontologist and naturalist Edward Drinker Cope in 1870, one of several Chalceus species he named from South American material during his prolific run of Neotropical fish descriptions in that era. The genus Chalceus is placed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) in its own family, Chalceidae, a small group of fast-swimming, large-scaled surface characins that was long treated as a subfamily within Characidae before being split out; it sits well apart from Serrasalmidae, the family that holds the true piranhas, pacus and silver dollars, despite superficial deep-bodied, silvery similarities in some relatives.
The common names "tucan fish" and "yellowfin chalceus" both reference the fish's coloured fins rather than any relationship to piranhas, and the species is one of several similar-looking Chalceus in the Amazon that are frequently confused with one another in the trade, including the more commonly available C. macrolepidotus. Reliable identification within the genus rests on fin colouration, scale counts and precise locality, and hobbyist sources note it is easy to mix this species up with its congeners.
Morphology
Chalceus erythrurus has an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body quite unlike the deep, diamond-shaped profile of a true piranha — it is built for sustained fast swimming near the surface, not ambush ambush striking. FishBase records a maximum published length of 9.5 in standard length, with Seriously Fish citing a typical adult aquarium size around 8 in; this is a mid-sized characin, not a giant, and not a fish that will ever approach the scale of the true pacus in the same order.
The body carries large, reflective silver scales that catch the light as the fish moves, with colour concentrated in the fins — the "yellowfin" and "tucan" names both point to warm yellow, orange or red tones in the tail and other fins that contrast against the bright, almost mirror-like flanks. In the wild, Chalceus erythrurus feeds on aquatic insects and crustaceans taken from the surface and water column, consistent with its upturned mouth and open-water lifestyle — this is a hunting, insectivorous shoaler, not a detritus grazer like many of its hemiodontid relatives. Given its open-water, surface-oriented habits, this species is best suited to a long aquarium with strong swimming room rather than a heavily obstructed tank, kept at 72–79 °F and a mildly acidic to neutral pH of roughly 6.0–7.0. It is a modest-sized, genuinely manageable characin at up to about 9.5 in — nothing like the outsized pacus or wolf fish elsewhere in this group that can outgrow a home aquarium — but its speed and jumpiness mean tankmates should be equally robust, fast-moving Amazonian species rather than slow or delicate fish.
