Taxonomy & naming
Chalceus fasciatus was described by the Scottish naturalist William Jardine in 1841. It sits in the genus Chalceus, traditionally placed in its own family or subfamily-level grouping (Chalceidae/Chalceinae) near the base of Characiformes, distinct from the pacu-and-piranha family Serrasalmidae and from the true tetras. The genus name comes from the Greek chalkeos, "of bronze/copper", a nod to the metallic sheen of the scales shared by all Chalceus species.
The species-level taxonomy of Chalceus fasciatus is genuinely unresolved. Several reference sources list it as species inquirenda — a name of uncertain application — and note it may prove to be a synonym of the more widely documented Chalceus macrolepidotus rather than a distinct, valid species.
