Taxonomy & naming
Characidium chancoense was described in 2020 by Agudelo-Zamora, Ortega-Lara and Taphorn in Zootaxa 4768(2), based on a holotype collected from the Río Chanco, a tributary of the upper Río Cauca in Valle del Cauca, Colombia. The species name refers to that type locality, the Río Chanco. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters, which also includes the sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax — and to the genus Characidium, a large group of slender, bottom-associated stream fish often called darter tetras or darter characins in the hobby.
The description places C. chancoense as one of several Characidium species found in sympatry within the trans-Andean upper Río Cauca system, part of Colombia's Chocó biogeographic region; the original paper notes it occurs alongside four other congeners in the same drainage, each apparently occupying a slightly different ecological niche. The species is distinguished from its relatives chiefly by its pigmentation pattern of 7 to 12 vertical bars along the body. Morphology
The holotype of Characidium chancoense measured 2 in standard length (about 2 in), placing it in line with the small-to-modest size typical of the genus — related species such as C. fasciatum, C. laterale and C. zebra generally run from roughly 1.5–3 in SL.
