Characidium chicoi is a small, bottom-dwelling darter tetra described in 2019, part of a large and still-growing genus of Crenuchidae that spend their lives perched on gravel and cobble rather than swimming in open water. Like its relatives it darts a short distance, stops dead against the substrate, darts again — the behaviour that gives the group its common name — and is built for cool, flowing South American streams rather than the warm, still water most characins are sold for. Very little has been published on this particular species beyond its original description, so most of what follows is drawn from the genus and family as a whole; keepers should treat any specific figures for C. chicoi itself as provisional.

Taxonomy & naming

Characidium chicoi was formally described in 2019 by da Graça, Ota and Domingues, part of a wave of new Characidium descriptions from South American river surveys over the past two decades. It sits in the genus Characidium within the family Crenuchidae — the darters and sailfin characins — a family split from the broader tetra assemblage on account of its distinctive bottom-perching lifestyle, incomplete or reduced lateral line in many species, and, in Characidium specifically, the lack of an adipose fin that most other characins carry.

The species epithet chicoi honours Francisco Alves Teixeira, known as "Chico," a retired laboratory assistant at the Universidade Estadual de Maringá with more than three decades of field-collecting experience — a common pattern in Characidium taxonomy, where recent descriptions frequently credit the technicians and collectors who built the specimen series the taxonomists worked from. As with many recently split Characidium species, identification from older regional records can be uncertain, and material once lumped under a wider-ranging name may eventually be reassigned as revisions continue.

Morphology

Specific measurements for Characidium chicoi were not available in the sources consulted for this article, so exact size and meristic counts should be treated as data sparse pending direct access to the original description. Based on the genus, Characidium species are small, slender, cylindrical fish with a distinctly incomplete lateral line and no adipose fin — two traits that separate them at a glance from most other small characins, which typically have both a complete lateral line and a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. A related, well-studied congener, Characidium fasciatum, tops out around 2 in standard length, which gives a rough sense of scale for the genus, though individual species vary.

Colouration across Characidium generally runs to camouflage patterns suited to a life spent resting on gravel and cobble — dark blotches, bars or speckling over a pale to olive body that breaks up the fish's outline against a mottled streambed. Without a description-level account of C. chicoi's specific pattern, keepers should expect a typical cryptic darter look rather than the bright colours associated with open-water tetras.

Habitat

Characidium chicoi is known from South America, with confirmed records reported from Brazil and Peru. Available notes point to a possible type locality in the Rio Iguaçu basin of Paraná, Brazil, though at least one other Characidium species was described from the Ucayali-Urubamba drainage in Peru around the same period, and the sources reviewed here could not confirm with certainty which specific river system anchors C. chicoi's type locality — this detail should be verified against the primary description before being stated as fact.

As a Crenuchidae darter, the species almost certainly favours flowing, well-oxygenated streams over standing water, resting against current-swept gravel, cobble and coarse sand rather than schooling in the water column. Darter genera in general prefer cooler water than most tropical aquarium characins — commonly cited genus-level ranges run from about 64–81 °F, with 68–75 °F considered the comfortable middle — and soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral chemistry, roughly pH 5.6–7.5 for the wider Crenuchidae group.

Feeding

Characidium are micro-predators built for picking small invertebrates off the streambed rather than filter-feeding or grazing. Genus- and family-level accounts describe a diet of small live and frozen foods — bloodworms, mosquito larvae, cyclops and daphnia, brine shrimp — taken readily, while flake food is often ignored outright because it neither looks nor behaves like natural prey.

In practice this means darter tetras are best fed foods that sink and move: live or frozen bloodworm and mosquito larvae, small crustaceans and similar fare, offered where the fish naturally forage along the substrate. Their narrow, downturned mouths are adapted to picking prey from crevices between stones rather than taking food from the surface, which is a further reason surface-feeding flake is a poor match for the genus.

Mating

No species-specific courtship account for Characidium chicoi was found in the sources reviewed. Hobby breeding notes for the genus describe conditioning pairs in cooler, softer, more acidic water and using a water change with cooler water as a spawning trigger, mirroring the flow and temperature shifts of a natural stream after rain — a pattern common across many South American stream-dwelling characins, though it has not been confirmed for this particular species.

Breeding

Characidium are egg-scatterers: a conditioned pair spawns over fine-leaved plants or similar cover, releasing eggs that are not guarded once laid. This puts the genus in a different breeding category from its Crenuchidae relatives Crenuchus and Poecilocharax, the sailfin characins, which are cave or leaf spawners with the male tending the clutch afterward — Characidium does not show that same parental-care pattern in the accounts consulted here. FishBase notes eggs hatching within roughly 36–48 hours under suitable conditions.

Hobby accounts describe a dedicated breeding setup with soft, acidic water, cool temperature, fine-leaved plants as an egg trap, and a cooler water change to help trigger spawning, consistent with the genus's preference for flowing, cool streams. No parental care beyond spawning has been documented for Characidium in the sources reviewed, and there is no record of this specific species being bred in the hobby with any regularity.

In the aquarium

Darter tetras are nano-scale, social fish best kept as a group rather than singly — hobby guides suggest a minimum of around 30 US gal for six or more individuals, with strong water flow to let the fish express their natural resting-and-darting behaviour against current. A dark, fine substrate is recommended to bring out their cryptic colouration, and cooler-than-typical-tropical temperatures (roughly 68–75 °F for the genus) suit them better than a standard warm community tank.

Because Characidium are reluctant flake feeders with a strong preference for live or frozen foods that move and sink, they are not an easy drop-in for a generalist community aquarium; keepers should be prepared to offer bloodworm, mosquito larvae or similar foods regularly. Given how little is documented about Characidium chicoi specifically, prospective keepers should treat it as a specialist stream-biotope fish for those set up to replicate flowing, cool, well-oxygenated water rather than a casual community addition, and should expect limited hobby availability given its very recent description.

Conservation

Characidium chicoi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2019, it falls into the Not Evaluated category simply because no formal assessment has yet been carried out, not because of any documented population concern. This is a common status for recently described, narrow-range South American stream fish, many of which are known from only a handful of localities and limited survey effort.

Without a population assessment or detailed distribution data beyond the Brazil and Peru records noted above, specific conservation pressures on this species cannot be stated with confidence. As with many small-bodied stream darters, habitat degradation, sedimentation and altered flow regimes in South American headwater streams are the general pressures relevant to the group, but none of these have been documented as specifically affecting C. chicoi in the sources reviewed here.
