Characidium deludens was described by Angela Zanata and Priscila Camelier in 2015, part of a wave of taxonomic work that has clarified the diversity of small darter characins across Brazilian coastal drainages. It belongs to the genus Characidium, one of the larger genera within the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters — in the subfamily Characidiinae, and sits within the order Characiformes alongside the tetras, pacus and piranhas, though Characidium species look and behave nothing like their showier relatives.
The species epithet "deludens" derives from the Latin for "deceiving" or "deluding," a reference to the fish's alternating vertical bar pattern, which can make individual bars hard to count or match reliably between specimens. The genus name Characidium is itself a diminutive of Charax, an older characiform genus name. As with many recently described Characidium, C. deludens is known only from a restricted type locality and has not been the subject of extensive follow-up study, so taxonomic and distributional knowledge remains modest.
Morphology
Characidium deludens is a small, elongate, cylindrical fish typical of the genus, reaching under 4 in in standard length. The body carries the alternating dark vertical bar pattern characteristic of many Characidium species, a pattern variable enough between individuals that it inspired the species name. The fins are unremarkable in size and colour compared to showier characins — this is a fish built for holding position against current and darting short distances, not for open-water cruising or display finnage.
Like other darters, C. deludens has a body plan suited to a benthic lifestyle: a fairly flattened underside that lets it rest directly on the substrate, and a build that favours quick, short bursts of movement over sustained swimming.
