Taxonomy & naming
Characidium dule was formally described in 2020 by Agudelo-Zamora, Tavera, Murillo and Ortega-Lara in the Journal of Fish Biology, based on specimens from the Atrato River drainage in Colombia's Chocó department. The description combined morphological comparison with molecular species-delimitation methods (COI barcoding analysed with GMYC, ABGD and bPTP approaches) to distinguish C. dule from its nearest relative, C. tatama, which occupies the neighbouring San Juan River on the Pacific side of the same biogeographic region. The two species are effectively mirror populations separated by the Chocó's complex drainage divides — C. dule in the Caribbean-draining Atrato, C. tatama in the Pacific-draining San Juan — a pattern that recurs often among Chocó freshwater fishes.
The species belongs to the genus Characidium, placed in the family Crenuchidae (the South American darters), a group of small, benthic, non-shoaling or loosely shoaling characins quite distinct in habit from the open-water tetras most aquarists associate with the order Characiformes. Characidium is the most species-rich genus in the family, with roughly 70 recognised species distributed through Central and South America, and Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; the genus placement here follows that authority.
