Characidium gomesi is a small, bottom-hugging darter tetra from the upper Paraná River drainage of Brazil, found in the Grande, Tietê and Paranapanema rivers. Like the rest of its genus, it is not a mid-water schooler but a sit-and-wait predator: it perches on rock or leaf litter, tail flicking, then darts a short distance to snatch a passing insect or crustacean before settling again. At a maximum of about 2.5 in SL it stays genuinely nano-sized, which makes it an easy fish to undersell in a shop tank but a rewarding one in a quiet, well-decorated aquarium that lets its perching, darting behaviour show. It is currently assessed as Least Concern, reflecting a lack of known widespread threats within its Paraná basin range rather than any special abundance data.

Tankmates should be similarly small and non-aggressive; this is not a fish suited to the boisterous, food-competitive community tanks that suit larger, more opportunistic characins. Given its more temperate upper-Paraná origin, it is worth erring toward the cooler, moderate end of typical tropical fishkeeping temperatures rather than assuming Amazon-basin warmth is required.
