Characidium heirmostigmata is a small, slender darter characin known only from the rio Ivaí drainage in the upper rio Paraná basin of Paraná State, Brazil. Like other members of its genus, it is not a shoaling open-water fish but a bottom-perching "hop and rest" darter that spends most of its time propped on its pectoral and pelvic fins over sand and gravel, dashing forward in short bursts to snatch tiny invertebrates rather than cruising for food. It reaches barely 2 in and has essentially no presence in the aquarium trade or the conservation literature, which makes it a useful reminder that the vast majority of Crenuchidae are unassuming stream-bed specialists rather than the showier blackwater sailfin characins the family is sometimes known for. Characidium heirmostigmata was described by da Graça & Pavanelli in 2008 as part of a broader revision of characidiin darters from the upper rio Paraná basin. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Characidium, a large assemblage of roughly 60-plus small, elongate, bottom-associated species distributed across South American coastal and inland drainages from the Guianas to the Paraná-Paraguay system. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and placement of this species within Characidium.

The genus Characidium is taxonomically active, with new species continuing to be split out of species complexes on the basis of fine details of colour pattern, squamation and osteology, and C. heirmostigmata itself was diagnosed from co-occurring congeners largely on the pattern of dark bars along its flanks — a diagnostic feature reflected in its species epithet (see Etymology). No dedicated common name has entered general use for this species; it is referred to by its scientific binomial in the sources available.

Morphology

Characidium heirmostigmata is a small, slender-bodied darter with the characteristic Characidium silhouette: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a pointed head, and fins built for short, controlled bursts rather than sustained cruising. Habitat

Like other members of the genus, it is a fish of flowing freshwater streams and river channels rather than still floodplain lakes.
