Taxonomy & naming
Characidium helmeri was described in 2015 by Angela M. Zanata, Luisa M. Sarmento-Soares and Marcelo Martins-Pinheiro, part of a wave of Characidium descriptions from Brazil's Atlantic coastal drainages over the last two decades that has considerably expanded the known diversity of the genus. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and their close relatives the sailfin characins (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax) — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are unified less by size or colour than by their distinctive, benthic, darting style of movement.
The species epithet honours Dr. José Luis Helmer, credited as the collector of the type material and recognised for pioneering studies on the freshwater fishes of Espírito Santo and the extreme south of Bahia. Characidium is a large and still actively revised genus — the Catalog of Fishes lists it as the most speciose genus in Crenuchidae — and many of its members, C. helmeri included, are separated from close congeners mainly by fine details of pigmentation pattern and meristic counts documented in the original description, which is why field identification of Characidium species is difficult without a reference to the type series.
Morphology
Characidium helmeri is a small, elongate, cylindrical fish, reaching a maximum recorded length of only about 1.5 in standard length — among the smallest species in a genus that is itself made up of small fish. The body carries the diagnostic pigmentation the description uses to separate it from related species: a series of dark, vertically elongated, irregular narrow spots or dashes along the flanks, most evident above the midlateral stripe and along the lower half of the body, and often appearing curved or zigzag-shaped rather than as clean, regular blotches.
As in other Characidium, the body plan is built for station-holding on the substrate rather than for sustained mid-water swimming: a slim profile, a flattened ventral surface, and paired fins used to prop the fish at an angle against the current or the stream bed. Data on this species specifically is sparse beyond the original description, and no information on external sexual dimorphism has been documented.
Habitat
The species is endemic to a very restricted range of coastal river systems in the extreme south of Bahia, Brazil, with its type locality in the Ribeirão river, part of the Rio Cahy basin. Recorded habitat is slow-flowing stretches of small rivers at low elevation, roughly 8 to 91 metres above sea level — modest, low-gradient coastal drainage rather than fast highland streams.
Detailed water chemistry specific to C. helmeri has not been published, but aquarium accounts of Characidium as a genus describe a fairly wide tolerance: a pH range of roughly 5.5–7.5 (optimum near neutral), general hardness from very soft to moderately hard (around 2–25 dH, optimum near 6 dH), and a temperate-to-warm range of about 64–81 °F. Given its coastal Bahia range, this species most likely experiences conditions toward the warmer, softer end of that spread, but keepers should treat those figures as a genus-level guide rather than a site-specific measurement.
Feeding
Characidium helmeri is an insectivorous micro-predator. Stomach-content data cited for the species records small aquatic insect larvae — chironomid (non-biting midge) larvae in particular — along with insect nymphs and other insect fragments, consistent with a fish that forages by picking prey items off the substrate and from among debris rather than grazing or filter-feeding.
In the aquarium, Characidium of this size are reported to accept frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia and Cyclops readily, but they are poor candidates for dry foods and will often ignore flake altogether. A keeper should plan on small, meaty live or frozen foods as the staple diet rather than assume a community flake regimen will sustain the fish.
Mating
No species-specific courtship account exists for Characidium helmeri in the available literature. General accounts of crenuchid breeding behaviour describe a ripe pair coming together side by side low in the water column, over open substrate or near hard surfaces, rather than any elaborate display or nest-building — courtship in this genus is understated compared with the cave- and leaf-spawning rituals of its sailfin-characin relatives Crenuchus and Poecilocharax. No sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species.
Breeding
Characidium as a genus are egg-scatterers rather than nest tenders: a pair spawns side by side over open substrate or among rocks and hard surfaces, releasing on the order of 100–150 eggs that scatter and adhere loosely nearby, with no parental care given afterward. Eggs are reported to hatch in roughly 30–40 hours at warm temperatures, and the resulting fry are tiny and require infusoria before they are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp.
Breeding Characidium in captivity is described as rare but achievable, generally in quiet, river-style setups with soft, slightly acidic water, shaded rocky cover and minimal disturbance. No breeding reports specific to C. helmeri have been published; this account follows the documented pattern for the genus rather than a confirmed record for the species itself.
In the aquarium
At a maximum size of about 1.5 in, Characidium helmeri is a genuine nano fish and, if obtainable at all, is suited to a small species or quiet community tank — sources on the genus suggest a minimum around 23.5 in for a small group. It is a bottom-oriented darter rather than a mid-water schooler, so tank design should prioritise open, sandy or fine-gravel patches for perching alongside cover from smooth stones or driftwood, with moderate to fairly strong current and good aeration to mimic its flowing coastal-stream habitat.
Because it is a genuine micro-predator that often refuses flake, feeding needs more attention than a typical nano community fish: frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia and Cyclops should be offered rather than assumed unnecessary. This species is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade — it was only described in 2015 from a narrow endemic range — so anyone encountering fish sold under this name should treat the identification with some caution and expect very little husbandry data to fall back on beyond genus-level generalisations.
Conservation
Characidium helmeri has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated. As a narrow-range endemic restricted to a small number of coastal river drainages in the extreme south of Bahia, it fits a pattern common among recently described Characidium — real but unassessed vulnerability tied to a very limited geographic footprint, where habitat degradation in even one or two watersheds could affect a meaningful share of the species' known range.
No population trend, threat assessment or trade-pressure data has been published for this species. In the absence of an IUCN assessment or dedicated field survey, its status is best treated as data-poor rather than assumed safe.
