Characidium japuhybense is a small, streamlined darter from the coastal river systems of southeastern Brazil, part of the family Crenuchidae rather than the true tetras it superficially resembles. It spends its time perched on or near the substrate of running water, propped on its pectoral and pelvic fins like a goby, before darting a short distance to snatch a midge larva or crustacean and settling again — behaviour that gives the genus its common name of "darter tetra." At a maximum size of 2 in it is a genuinely nano fish, and in the aquarium it wants clean, flowing, soft and acidic water and small live or frozen foods rather than flake. Taxonomy & naming

Characidium japuhybense was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Lauro Travassos in 1949, with a type locality at Japuhyba, a coastal stream system in Rio de Janeiro state — the source of its species epithet. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae, the South American darters, a group that was long lumped into Characidae (hence the enduring trade name "darter tetra") but is now recognised as a distinct lineage on the strength of its distinctive benthic, perching behaviour and internal anatomy.

The genus Characidium is large and taxonomically active, with many superficially similar species distinguished mainly by fine details of colour pattern, scale counts and meristics rather than obvious external features, so field identification of preserved or photographed specimens can be difficult. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid combination Characidium japuhybense Travassos, 1949; this article follows that combination without alteration.

Characidium japuhybense is a small, slender, torpedo-shaped fish, reaching a documented maximum of 2 in standard length.
