Characidium kalunga was described in 2021 by Melo, Bouquerel, Masumoto, França & Netto-Ferreira in Neotropical Ichthyology, based on material from the rio Tocantinzinho, part of the upper rio Tocantins basin in Goiás, Brazil, at roughly 1,656 ft elevation. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters — in the genus Characidium, a large group of small, benthic, stream-dwelling characins that perch on the substrate rather than schooling in open water.
The species epithet honours the Comunidade Quilombola Kalunga, an Afro-Brazilian community descended from escaped enslaved people whose traditional territory in the Chapada dos Veadeiros region includes the type locality; "kalunga" itself is a word of Bantu origin referring to a sacred place. As a species described only in 2021, Characidium kalunga has no significant synonymy or history of name changes, and it has not yet appeared in the aquarium trade under any documented common name.
Morphology
Characidium kalunga is a small, elongate, cylindrical characin reaching a maximum recorded standard length of about 2 in, consistent with the diminutive, nano-scale body plan typical of the genus. Like other Characidium, it has a slender body, a fairly pointed head, and fins — particularly the pelvics — proportioned for perching rather than sustained swimming.
The original description notes a colour pattern of vertical bars along the flank that are disconnected dorsally (not meeting along the back), together with a distinct dark saddle mark at the base of the second through eighth dorsal-fin rays. This combination of an interrupted bar pattern and a discrete dorsal saddle is part of what distinguishes it from other Characidium species sharing the Chapada dos Veadeiros highlands.
Habitat
The species is known only from the type locality area in the rio Tocantinzinho, within the upper rio Tocantins basin in the Chapada dos Veadeiros region of Goiás, Brazil, at high elevation (around 1,656 ft) for a Neotropical characin. FishBase lists its habitat as freshwater and benthopelagic in a tropical stream setting, consistent with the genus's general preference for flowing, well-oxygenated water over sand, gravel or rock rather than still or heavily vegetated water.
Detailed water-chemistry data for the type locality has not been published in the sources available for this account, so specific pH, hardness and temperature figures for Characidium kalunga itself should be treated as data sparse. Related Characidium species from similar highland Cerrado and Amazonian tributary systems are generally found in clear, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated streams with sandy or rocky beds.

As micro-predators that often ignore flake food, keepers of related species report needing a steady supply of small live or frozen foods. Given the total absence of trade or captive-care history for this specific species, anyone acquiring C. kalunga should treat it as an experimental, specialist fish rather than a routine purchase, and should not expect to source captive-bred stock.
