Characidium mirim is a tiny bottom-perching darter from the Rio das Mortes drainage of Mato Grosso, Brazil, and by FishBase's own account the smallest known member of a genus that already runs small — adults top out around 1 in standard length. It belongs to the Crenuchidae, the South American darter and sailfin-characin family, and it lives up to the family's common name: rather than swimming continuously in open water, it perches on the substrate on its lower fins and darts in short bursts between rests, in the manner of a true benthic darter rather than a shoaling tetra. Described only in 2013, it is a species most aquarists will never see in the trade, but it is a useful reminder that not every characin is a piranha or a pacu — many are unassuming micro-predators of stream beds and leaf litter.

Characidium mirim was described in 2013 by Netto-Ferreira, Birindelli and Buckup, part of a wave of taxonomic work that has substantially expanded the recognised diversity within Characidium over the past two decades. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin characins — within the order Characiformes, a family whose two subfamilies split cleanly along ecological lines: the shy, cave- and leaf-spawning sailfin characins (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax) prized as gentle blackwater nano fish, and the far more speciose Characidiinae, the stream-bed darters, of which Characidium mirim is one of roughly sixty-plus described species.

The species epithet "mirim" comes from Tupi, the indigenous Brazilian language family that has supplied many South American place and species names, and simply means "small" — an apt and economical name for what FishBase records as the smallest known species in the genus. The type locality is the Rio das Mortes drainage in Mato Grosso, Brazil, part of the upper Araguaia-Tocantins system. As with many recently described, narrow-range Characidium, the species is best treated cautiously in the trade: darters sold simply as "Characidium sp." or "darter tetra" may or may not be this species, and firm identification rests on the original description rather than on aquarium-shop labelling.
