Taxonomy & naming
Characidium nambiquara was formally described by Angela Zanata and Willian Ohara in 2020 in the Journal of Fish Biology, based on a holotype of 2.5 in standard length and paratypes ranging down to 1.5 in SL, all collected from the upper rio Guaporé within the rio Madeira basin in Brazil. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters, which also includes the blackwater sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax — and to the genus Characidium, a large assemblage of slim, bottom-associated stream fishes distinguished from most other characins by their habit of resting propped on the substrate rather than swimming in midwater.
The species epithet honours the Nambiquara, an Indigenous people of the Guaporé valley in Mato Grosso, reflecting the type locality rather than any physical trait of the fish. Zanata & Ohara distinguished C. nambiquara from its congeners by a combination of characters including a completely naked isthmus and prepectoral area, a spotted rather than striped pattern on larger individuals, and dark dashes on the fins, with no midlateral stripe or vertical bar series of the kind seen in many related Characidium species. As with much of the genus, identification rests on close examination of squamation and pigmentation rather than obvious external features, and the species is known only from its original description and subsequent taxonomic records rather than from a body of ecological literature.
Morphology
Characidium nambiquara is a small, elongate, laterally compressed fish, with the holotype measuring 2.5 in SL (roughly 2.5 in) and paratypes as small as 1.5 in SL — consistent with the genus as a whole, in which most species top out well under 4 in. The body plan is the classic darter shape: a slim, torpedo-like profile with a flattened underside adapted for perching on rocks and sediment, held up on the pelvic and anal fins rather than free-swimming in the water column.
Diagnostic features noted in the original description include an isthmus and prepectoral area that are completely scaleless, a pattern of spots (rather than a continuous stripe) developing on larger specimens, and small black dashes along the fins. Unlike many related Characidium, C. nambiquara lacks a midlateral stripe and lacks the vertical bar pattern seen in some congeners, giving it a more mottled, spotted look at larger sizes. As in most darters, colouration is subdued — silvery to olive-brown tones suited to blending into a gravel or sand streambed — rather than the bright patterning associated with open-water tetras.
Habitat
The species is known from the upper rio Guaporé, a clearwater to slightly turbid tributary system within the rio Madeira basin that forms part of the Brazil–Bolivia border region. Like other stream-dwelling Characidium, it is associated with flowing, well-oxygenated water over gravel, sand or rocky substrate rather than the still, densely vegetated backwaters favoured by many other small characins.
Detailed water-chemistry data specific to C. nambiquara were not captured in available sources, but Characidium as a genus is consistently reported from cool-to-moderate, clear, current-swept streams with high dissolved oxygen — habitat conditions that favour a fish built to grip the bottom rather than fight a current in open water. Given the limited documentation for this particular species, keepers and researchers should treat its precise habitat requirements as inferred from the genus rather than independently confirmed.
Feeding
Characidium nambiquara is a micro-predator, a designation reflected across the genus: darters hold position on the substrate and dart out to snatch tiny live prey rather than grazing or filtering. In the wild this diet is expected to consist of small aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and similar invertebrates picked from the streambed and drifting in the current.
In captivity, congeners of this species are frequently reported to refuse dry flake food, and successful keeping depends on offering small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, daphnia and cyclops are all cited as suitable for the genus. Given the species' small adult size, food items need to be correspondingly small, particularly for the smaller individuals seen in the type series.
Mating
No species-specific courtship behaviour has been documented for Characidium nambiquara in the sources available. Within the broader Crenuchidae, breeding behaviour varies sharply by genus: the sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax are cave- or leaf-spawners in which the male provides brief guarding of the clutch, while Characidium itself is reported in hobby literature as a substrate egg-scatterer with no comparable pairing or nest-defence behaviour recorded. There is no evidence of dimorphism-linked courtship display, colour change, or pairing ritual specific to this species in the current literature; data are sparse.
Breeding
General accounts of Characidium as a genus describe an egg-scattering mode over the substrate: ripe fish release adhesive eggs among fine gravel or plant roots in soft, acidic water, with clutches on the order of roughly 150 eggs reported for congeners and hatching in roughly 30–40 hours at suitable temperatures. No sustained parental guarding of the nest is described for the genus, in contrast to the brief male care documented in its Crenuchidae relatives Crenuchus and Poecilocharax. Fry are raised in the hobby on infusoria, finely crushed food tablets and newly hatched brine shrimp as they grow large enough to take them.
No breeding account specific to Characidium nambiquara itself has been documented — this species has essentially no aquarium-trade history — so the above should be read as generalised from the genus rather than confirmed for this species. Given its Critically Endangered status and extremely restricted known range, captive breeding of C. nambiquara has no documented precedent.
In the aquarium
Characidium nambiquara is not an established aquarium species — it is a recently described, range-restricted stream fish with no meaningful presence in the hobby, and prospective keepers should not expect to find genuine specimens in trade. What follows draws on general Characidium care rather than any account of this species specifically. Darters of this genus are best suited to a nano to small species tank furnished with fine sand or smooth gravel, some flow, and driftwood or smooth stones that let the fish perch and dart in the way that defines its behaviour; a group of six or more is typically recommended to diffuse the mild territoriality some Characidium show toward each other.
Water should be kept cool to moderate, clear and well-oxygenated with good current — closer to a flowing stream than a still tropical tank — and strong filtration or an airstone is worthwhile given the genus's preference for high dissolved oxygen. Tankmates should be equally small and peaceful, since Characidium are neither aggressive nor able to compete with boisterous fish for the tiny live foods they typically require. Given the fish's rarity and Critically Endangered status, any specimen encountered in the trade should raise questions about legality and sourcing rather than be treated as a routine acquisition.
Conservation
Characidium nambiquara is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered, reflecting its known occurrence from only the type locality in the upper rio Guaporé of the rio Madeira basin — an extremely restricted range that leaves the species vulnerable to any localised habitat disturbance, water-quality change or damming within that single stream system. As a species described only in 2020, published information on population trends and specific threats remains limited; data are sparse beyond the original description and subsequent taxonomic confirmations.
The genus Characidium as a whole includes many narrow-range stream endemics across South America, and species restricted to a single headwater system such as C. nambiquara are characteristically at higher risk from deforestation-linked sedimentation, agricultural runoff and stream modification than wide-ranging floodplain characins. No aquarium trade is documented for this species, so collection pressure is not identified as a driver of its conservation status; habitat integrity in the upper Guaporé is the operative concern.
