Taxonomy & naming
Characidium oiticicai was described by the Brazilian ichthyologist Lauro Travassos in 1967. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters, which also contains the blackwater sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax — within the order Characiformes. The genus Characidium is large and taxonomically active, with many superficially similar stream-dwelling species distinguished mainly by fine details of colour pattern, squamation and meristic counts, so field identification of preserved or photographed specimens can be uncertain without close examination.
The species epithet oiticicai is a patronym, in the pattern typical of Characidium species named for Brazilian naturalists and collectors. As with much of the genus, C. oiticicai is a narrow-range endemic rather than a widely distributed species, which is consistent with its Atlantic Forest type locality in the Serra do Mar ecoregion of southeastern Brazil.
Morphology
Characidium oiticicai is a small, slender-bodied darter with the elongated, subcylindrical shape typical of the genus — built for perching and short bursts of motion along the streambed rather than for sustained open-water swimming. FishBase records a maximum length of 2.5 in standard length for the species, placing it firmly among the smaller Crenuchidae and well within nano-fish territory for a home aquarium.
