Taxonomy & naming
Characidium papachibe was described by Peixoto and Wosiacki in 2013 as part of a revision of Characidium species from the lower Amazon basin, with its type locality in the Rio Aruã, a tributary of the Rio Tapajós in Pará state, Brazil. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters, which also includes the sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax — within the order Characiformes. Crenuchidae was long treated as a subfamily of Characidae, but is now recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as its own family, distinguished largely by this bottom-perching, darter-like body plan and behaviour.
Characidium is a large genus of small, cryptically patterned stream fish scattered across South American drainages, and many species, including this one, are known only from their original description and scattered database records. The common name "darter tetra" (sometimes just "darter") is used loosely across the genus in the aquarium trade; no distinct vernacular name specific to C. papachibe is documented in available sources.
Morphology
Characidium papachibe is a small, elongate, cylindrical fish reaching a maximum recorded length of only about 1 in standard length, making it one of the smallest species covered in this atlas. Like other members of the genus it has a slender body, a relatively flat ventral profile suited to resting on the substrate, and paired fins — particularly the pectorals — positioned and built to prop the fish up off the bottom rather than to power sustained swimming.
Detailed morphological description, including exact colour pattern and fin-ray counts, is confined to the original 2013 species description; published photographs and general accounts are scarce, and available sources do not document sexual dimorphism in colour or shape for this species specifically.
Habitat
The species is known from the Rio Aruã, a clearwater-to-blackwater tributary stream of the Rio Tapajós system in the lower Amazon basin of Brazil, and appears to be a narrow-range endemic restricted to that drainage. FishBase records a water temperature range of roughly 77–81 °F for the species, consistent with a small, shaded forest stream in the lowland tropics rather than a large river channel.
As with other Characidium, it is reasonable to expect the species favours flowing water with some current over rocky, sandy or leaf-littered substrate, since darters across the genus are stream-adapted, bottom-perching fish rather than open-water or still-water species — but locality-specific habitat detail beyond the type description has not been located in available sources.
Feeding
Characidium papachibe is a micro-predator, in keeping with the whole darter genus: related species and general Crenuchidae accounts describe a diet built on small aquatic insect larvae — chironomid (midge) larvae in particular — along with mayfly nymphs and other micro-invertebrates picked from the streambed and water column in short, targeted darts rather than continuous grazing or filter feeding.
No diet study specific to C. papachibe has been located; the above reflects genus-level and closely related species accounts rather than direct observation of this species. In an aquarium setting this feeding style typically translates to a preference for small live or frozen foods over dry flake, which many darters ignore or take poorly.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour specific to Characidium papachibe has been documented in available sources. Across the genus Characidium, reproduction is generally described as substrate spawning without an elaborate courtship display or nest-building, with pairs or small groups depositing eggs directly onto the streambed.
Breeding
Breeding biology has not been published for this species specifically. General hobby and genus-level accounts of Characidium describe substrate egg-scattering — pairs releasing and fertilising eggs side by side over fine substrate or among rootlets and leaf litter, sometimes numbering around 150 eggs per spawning — with no parental care of the eggs or fry after deposition. This differs from the cave- and leaf-spawning behaviour with brief male care seen in the related sailfin characins (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax) within the same family; the two lineages should not be conflated. Data on C. papachibe itself is sparse, and it is not documented as an established aquarium-bred fish.
In the aquarium
Characidium papachibe is essentially undescribed in the aquarium hobby, and dedicated care information for this exact species has not been located. Based on its very small adult size (about 1 in) and on general Characidium care guidance, a suitable setup would be a modest nano aquarium with fine substrate, some water movement, and hiding spots such as driftwood, leaf litter or fine-leaved plants for a bottom-dwelling fish that spends most of its time perched rather than swimming in open water. Genus-wide guidance suggests darters do best kept in a group rather than alone, and are peaceful, easily overlooked tankmates for other small, calm nano species.
Because it is a micro-predator, offer small live or frozen foods — microworm, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, small bloodworm — rather than relying on flake, which the genus is known to refuse or ignore. Given how little is published about this particular species, keepers should treat any care regimen as extrapolated from the wider genus rather than confirmed for C. papachibe.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Characidium papachibe as Least Concern, in an assessment dated November 2018. This is a fairly recent, narrow-range Amazonian endemic known from a single tributary system, and available sources do not report specific population trend data or documented threats; the Least Concern rating should be read in that context rather than as evidence of an extensively studied, secure population. As with many small, recently described characins from Amazonian headwater and tributary streams, habitat pressures common to the region — deforestation, sedimentation and local water-quality change — are the general long-term watch items, though none are documented as currently acting on this specific population.
