Characidium purpuratum was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1882. It sits in the genus Characidium within the family Crenuchidae (the South American darters), order Characiformes — a family split, per the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), into two very different lifestyles under one roof: the cave- and leaf-spawning sailfin characins of the subfamily Crenuchinae (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax), and the much larger, stream-bed-perching darter radiation of Characidiinae, which includes Characidium itself alongside genera such as Melanocharacidium and Elachocharax.
Characidium is a large and taxonomically active genus — new species continue to be described from Amazonian and Andean-margin drainages, and many older records are complicated by look-alike species sharing the same rivers. C. purpuratum has no widely used trade name and is essentially a taxonomic and biogeographic data point rather than an established aquarium fish; identification of any wild-collected "Characidium sp." offered in the hobby should not be assumed to be this species without a confirmed source locality.
Morphology
Like other Characidium, C. purpuratum has the classic darter build: an elongate, fairly slender, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened underside, and large, wing-like pectoral and pelvic fins that the fish rests on when perched motionless on the substrate — the same functional trick used by unrelated stream-bed fish such as gobies and hillstream loaches. FishBase records a maximum published length of 2 in standard length, placing it firmly in nano territory alongside its congeners.
Colouration in Characidium generally runs to a pale, sandy-to-olive ground colour broken by a dark lateral stripe or a row of blotches along the flank and irregular dark saddles across the back — cryptic patterning suited to a fish that relies on stillness and substrate camouflage rather than speed or shoal confusion to avoid predators. The specific epithet purpuratum ("purple, empurpled") points to a purplish cast to the body or fins reported in the original description or in life colouration, though detailed colour notes for this particular species are sparse in the available literature.
Habitat
Characidium purpuratum is documented from the Amazon River basin at its Andean margin in Ecuador — headwater and upper-tributary streams flowing off the eastern slope of the Andes into the Amazon system. Fish in this position in the drainage typically inhabit clear, flowing, well-oxygenated water over rock, gravel and sand, the classic darter habitat: riffles and runs where current keeps the substrate clean and oxygen levels high, rather than the sluggish, leaf-litter-choked blackwater favoured by the sailfin characins in the same family.
FishBase records a benthopelagic lifestyle in freshwater with a documented temperature range of roughly 68–77 °F, cooler than the lowland Amazon average and consistent with an Andean-margin, higher-elevation stream origin. No pH or hardness data are recorded in the sources reviewed for this account; keepers working from congeneric Characidium should default to soft, well-oxygenated, moving water rather than assume anything more specific for this species without further data.
Feeding
Characidium purpuratum is a micro-predator, not a grazer or a flake-eater. In the aquarium, darter characins of this genus are reported to often ignore dry flake and prepared foods and do best on small live or frozen fare — microworm, baby brine shrimp, chopped bloodworm, Daphnia and Cyclops — offered in amounts matched to their small mouths. Mating

Characidium purpuratum is not an established aquarium fish — it turns up, if at all, as an occasional wild-collected bycatch from Ecuadorian Amazon-margin exports rather than as a named trade item — but its needs can be inferred confidently from its close relatives and its documented habitat. A darter of this size (roughly 2 in) belongs in a nano-to-small setup with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, smooth river stones for perching, and, most importantly, real water movement: these are riffle-and-run fish, not still-water fish, and a tank without a decent current or powerhead undersells their natural behaviour.
Water should be kept cooler than a typical tropical Amazon community tank, in the 68–77 °F range documented for the species, well oxygenated and clean — darters are sensitive to poor water quality given their benthic, current-loving habits. Characidium are reported by hobbyists as peaceful, social bottom-dwellers best kept in a small group of their own kind rather than singly, and they should be paired only with calm, similarly small tankmates that will not out-compete them for the tiny live foods they favour. Given how little is documented about this specific species, anyone acquiring it should treat every husbandry detail as provisional and watch the fish closely rather than assume it matches a better-known Characidium exactly.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Characidium purpuratum as Least Concern, with an assessment dated 1 March 2007. This reflects, as with many small-range Andean-margin stream fish, a lack of documented major threats at the time of assessment rather than an extensively monitored, secure population — the species is obscure enough that little population-trend data appears to exist beyond the original assessment.
As with other headwater and upper-tributary fish along the Andean margin of the Amazon, the background pressures relevant to its habitat are deforestation-linked sedimentation, water-quality change and hydrological alteration from development in Ecuador's eastern slope drainages, though no source reviewed here documents a specific threat to this species. It is not known to be part of any established ornamental trade, so collection pressure is presumed negligible.
