Characidium xanthopterum is a small, bottom-perching darter characin endemic to the Central Brazilian Plateau, described in 2008 from tributaries of the upper rio Paraná and upper rio Tocantins basins. Like the rest of its genus it belongs to a group hobbyists sometimes lump in with the flashy, big-shoal characins, but Characidium behaves nothing like a tetra: it is a micro-predator that rests on rock and sand between short darting bursts, more reminiscent of a goby or a true darter than a mid-water schooler. The species is named for its bright yellow fins, which persist through adulthood after the dark lateral bars typical of juveniles and many relatives fade away. It remains a scarce and largely unstudied fish in the hobby, best understood as a quiet, substrate-oriented micro-predator for a well-run nano or specialist community rather than a showpiece shoaling fish.

Taxonomy & naming

Characidium xanthopterum was formally described in 2008 by Silveira, Langeani, da Graça, Pavanelli and Buckup, with the type locality at Caldas Novas, Goiás, in the upper rio Paraná basin. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters — a family that also contains the sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax, though those genera differ sharply in body form and behaviour from the slender, stream-bed-hugging Characidium. Within Crenuchidae, Characidium is the largest and most widespread genus, comprising dozens of small, cryptic species distributed across South and Central America, many of them, like this one, described only in the last two decades as regional collecting and taxonomic revision has intensified.

The species epithet "xanthopterum" is diagnostic rather than decorative: the original description distinguishes C. xanthopterum from its close relatives chiefly by the loss of dark lateral bars in adults over roughly 1.5 in standard length, combined with a bright yellow coloration that persists across the fins. As with much of the genus, field identification of preserved or photographed specimens can be difficult without close attention to these characters, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for confirming the currently valid combination.

Morphology

Characidium xanthopterum is a small fish, reaching a maximum recorded size of only 2 in standard length. It has the elongate, subcylindrical body typical of Characidium — built for holding position against current and darting short distances rather than sustained mid-water swimming — with a flattened ventral profile that lets it perch directly on rock and sand rather than hovering above it.

The species' defining feature, and the source of its name, is its coloration: unlike many congeners that retain a series of dark vertical bars along the flanks into adulthood, mature C. xanthopterum lose these bars and instead show bright yellow across the fins. This shift happens at a size threshold cited in the original description (specimens larger than about 1.5 in SL), meaning juveniles may still show some barring before developing the cleaner, yellow-finned adult pattern.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Central Brazilian Plateau, known only from tributaries of the rio Paranaíba drainage in the upper rio Paraná basin and the upper rio Tocantins basin, in Goiás State, Brazil. It is a riffle-dwelling fish, associated with rocky stream beds where pebbles and sand accumulate between larger stones — fast, well-oxygenated, structurally complex water rather than still backwaters or floodplain lakes.

FishBase classifies the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, consistent with a fish that spends most of its time resting on or just above the substrate. Specific published water-chemistry data for this species is sparse; related Characidium such as C. rachovii are documented from cooler subtropical waters (around 68–75 °F), and the genus as a whole is generally kept and reported in the range of roughly 72–79 °F, which is a reasonable proxy in the absence of species-specific figures for C. xanthopterum.

Feeding

Characidium xanthopterum is a micro-predator, a classification borne out by its trophic level (recorded on FishBase as 3.4 ± 0.3), placing it solidly among small invertebrate-hunting fishes rather than grazers or generalist omnivores. In the wild it almost certainly targets aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates dislodged by current across the riffles it inhabits, ambushed from its resting position on the substrate.

In the aquarium, hobby accounts for the genus are consistent: Characidium often ignore dry flake outright and need to be offered live or frozen foods sized for a small mouth — bloodworm, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, daphnia and cyclops are all reported as accepted. Keepers should not assume a Characidium will adapt to flake-only feeding; a keeper unwilling to offer live or frozen micro-foods regularly should not take this species on.

Mating

No species-specific courtship description for Characidium xanthopterum was found in the available literature; the genus is not well studied at this level of detail, and this is a genuinely obscure fish in both scientific and hobby accounts. General husbandry literature for the genus describes conditioning in soft, acidic water as the trigger for spawning behaviour, with fine-leaved plants such as Java Moss providing both a spawning substrate and cover — a pattern reasonable to expect in this species as well, though it should be treated as inference from congeners rather than a confirmed account for C. xanthopterum specifically.

Breeding

Characidium species, including this one, are egg-scatterers over the substrate and fine vegetation, not nest-builders, mouthbrooders or bubble-nest spawners. Hobby accounts for the genus describe a female scattering on the order of 150 eggs across fine-leaved plants such as Java Moss, with no parental care — eggs hatch in roughly 30–40 hours, and breeders typically remove the adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Newly hatched fry are reported to require infusoria in the first days before graduating to baby brine shrimp nauplii. There is no documentation of C. xanthopterum being regularly bred in the aquarium trade; the notes above reflect general Characidium husbandry rather than a confirmed spawning record for this specific species, and a prospective breeder should expect to be working from first principles.

In the aquarium

At under 2 in, Characidium xanthopterum is a genuinely nano-scale fish, but its bottom-perching, darting habit means it appreciates floor space and current more than water depth — a longer, shallower footprint with a rocky, pebble-and-sand substrate and moderate flow suits its riffle-dwelling nature better than a tall, still tank. It is not documented as an aggressive or territorial fish, but as a micro-predator it should not be trusted with fish or fry small enough to be eaten, and its refusal of dry foods means the tank needs to support a live/frozen feeding routine rather than a flake regimen.

This species is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade; the notes here are drawn from FishBase and general Characidium care literature rather than trade-specific experience. Anyone keeping it should expect to be working with wild-collected or very limited stock, and should provide the well-oxygenated, current-swept conditions that reflect its riffle habitat rather than treating it as a generic community nano fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Characidium xanthopterum as Least Concern, an assessment dated November 2018. This is a narrow-range endemic — known only from the Central Brazilian Plateau's upper rio Paraná and upper rio Tocantins tributaries — so the Least Concern rating should be read as reflecting no documented population decline or major identified threat at assessment time, not a broad or secure distribution in the way a widespread Amazonian species would carry that rating.

As with many recently described, single-region stream fish, there is little ongoing population monitoring, and the species is not a presence in the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a relevant concern. Land-use change, agricultural runoff and hydrological alteration of small Cerrado-region streams are the general long-term pressures facing fish endemic to this plateau, though no species-specific data on such threats to C. xanthopterum was found in the available sources.
