Taxonomy & naming
Citharinus congicus was described by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1897, based on material from the Congo basin. It belongs to the family Citharinidae — the citharinids, a small African family of deep-bodied, algae- and detritus-grazing characiforms — which sits apart from the plant-shredding distichodontids (Distichodus and relatives) and from the predatory Hepsetidae (African pike-characins) within the broader characin assemblage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination Citharinus congicus within genus Citharinus.
Citharinus is a small genus of large, schooling, silvery fishes restricted to African rivers, and its members are frequently confused with one another and with the related genus Citharinops because they share a similar deep-bodied, compressed silhouette and lack of strong distinguishing colour pattern; reliable identification typically rests on fin-ray counts, scale counts and other meristic characters rather than field markings. The common thread across the family is a grazing, largely herbivorous or detritivorous lifestyle very different from the plant-shredding or predatory habits of their better-known characiform relatives.
Morphology
Citharinus congicus has the classic citharinid build: a laterally compressed, deep, almost oval body profile, a small terminal or slightly subterminal mouth suited to grazing rather than seizing prey, and an overall silvery colouration with little in the way of bold pattern or contrasting markings. Fin shape is unremarkable and functional rather than showy, in keeping with a fish that spends its life foraging over vegetation and substrate rather than displaying.
The species reaches a maximum recorded total length of about 17 in, which places it firmly among the larger characiforms kept in captivity — considerably larger than the small tetra- and barb-type fish most aquarists associate with the order, and a size that should shape any stocking decision from the outset.
Habitat
Citharinus congicus is native to the Congo River basin in Central Africa, with its type locality at Stanley Falls on the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; its documented range extends through the lower and middle Congo system as far as Lake Upemba, and it has also been reported from the Ruaha River system in Tanzania. Within this range it inhabits river channels and associated floodplain and lake habitats typical of the Congo basin, an environment shaped by strong seasonal flooding and generally warm, soft-to-moderate water chemistry.
Recorded water parameters for the species fall around 70–81 °F with a pH of roughly 6.9–7.2 — warm, closer to neutral water rather than the extreme soft blackwater sometimes assumed for African rivers, though conditions vary locally across its Congo basin range.
Feeding
Citharinus congicus is an omnivorous grazer rather than a predator: available accounts describe a diet spanning aquatic invertebrates, aquatic plant material, small fish and crustaceans, consistent with the citharinid family's general habit of browsing algae, detritus and soft vegetation over the substrate and among plant beds. It is also noted as an active daytime forager that will rise to the surface and can leap to snatch flying insects, a more athletic habit than its grazing reputation might suggest.
In the aquarium this profile calls for a predominantly vegetable-forward diet — algae-based and vegetable wafers, blanched greens and other plant matter — supplemented with occasional protein such as small invertebrates or quality omnivore pellets, mirroring the balance seen in the wild diet rather than a heavy meat-based regimen.
Mating
No detailed courtship or spawning behaviour for Citharinus congicus has been documented in the sources consulted. The species is not known to have been bred in captivity, and the available literature does not describe pair formation, territorial behaviour or spawning triggers for it specifically. Data on this stage of the life cycle is sparse.
Breeding
Citharinus congicus is not established in captive breeding. Fisheries literature on the genus notes that citharinids historically cultivated in Congo basin fish ponds as a food source have not been successfully bred under pond or aquaculture conditions, and by extension the species has essentially no record of aquarium spawning. Based on the broader biology of Citharinidae, the presumed natural mode is egg-scattering typical of the family, but this has not been confirmed for C. congicus specifically and should be treated as inference rather than documented fact.
Given this, prospective keepers should not expect to breed this species at home; any wild population growth depends entirely on natural reproduction in the Congo basin, not aquaculture or hobby propagation.
In the aquarium
Citharinus congicus is rarely seen in the aquarium trade, and its documented adult size of up to 17 in total length means it needs a genuinely large, long aquarium to accommodate a full-grown fish — this is not a species for a standard community tank, and any keeper taking one on should plan tank size around the adult, not the juvenile it starts as. Accounts describe it as sociable and pleasant-tempered, with no fin-nipping noted, and it does best kept in a group of its own kind or alongside other robust, similarly sized tankmates rather than in isolation.
Water should be kept warm, in the roughly 70–81 °F range, with a near-neutral pH around 6.9–7.2, and — reflecting its largely herbivorous diet — the tank should offer either hardy, unpalatable plantings or accept that softer vegetation will be grazed. Strong filtration and generous swimming space matter for a fish of this eventual bulk, and because it is not bred in captivity, any specimen in the trade should be assumed wild-collected.
Conservation
Citharinus congicus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, reflecting a wide distribution across the Congo basin and no evidence of significant population decline. It is not a species of particular conservation concern at present.
The species has a history of local food-fish use in the Congo basin, and, as with many Congo basin fishes, longer-term pressures such as habitat change, sedimentation and fishing pressure across its range are worth watching even though the species itself is not currently classified as threatened. Because it is not aquacultured or hobby-bred, any conservation story for the aquarium trade specifically would run through wild collection rather than farming.
