Distichodus antonii was described by the Dutch zoologist Marie Anne Adriana (Anna) Schilthuis in 1891, one of relatively few nineteenth-century fish descriptions authored by a woman. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, the African "distichodontid" characins, within the order Characiformes — a family that also includes the citharinids and sits alongside, but taxonomically apart from, the South American Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus and silver dollars) with which this article's "Piranhas & Pacus" grouping shares only a broad Characiformes ancestry, not a close relationship.
