Distichodus langi was described in 1917 by the American ornithologist-turned-naturalist John Thomas Nichols and his colleague Ludlow Griscom, based on material collected during American Museum of Natural History expeditions to the Congo basin. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae, a strictly African family of characiform fishes that, together with the citharinids (Citharinidae) and the predatory Hepsetidae, make up the African branch of the order Characiformes — a lineage distinct from the South American piranhas, pacus and tetras despite sharing the same order.
The species has had a somewhat unsettled taxonomic history: it has at times been treated as a junior synonym of the closely related Distichodus antonii, but is now recognized as a valid, distinct species. The genus name Distichodus derives from Greek roots referring to its characteristic double row of teeth, a feature shared across the genus's roughly 20-plus species, which range from small, peaceable nano fish to large, aggressive plant-eaters. The species epithet honours Herbert Lang (1879–1957), a taxidermist and field collector for the American Museum of Natural History whose Congo expeditions supplied much of the material described in this era.
Morphology
Distichodus langi shows the classic Distichodus body plan: an elongated, laterally compressed silhouette with a small, underslung, toothless-looking mouth adapted for grazing rather than grasping prey, and a deeply forked caudal fin.
