Crenuchus spilurus, the sailfin characin, is the sole species in its genus and the best-known member of the Crenuchidae, the South American darters — a family named for a bottom-perching, dart-and-rest habit closer to a goby or a true darter than to the open-water schooling of a typical tetra. It is a small, quiet blackwater fish of the Amazon, Orinoco and Guianan drainages, prized in the hobby less for size than for the mature male's tall, flag-like dorsal and anal fins and a spangled, iridescent flank pattern. Crenuchus spilurus is a micro-predator, not a flake-eating community fish, and a genuinely shy one: it does best in a quiet, densely planted or leaf-littered species or nano tank rather than a boisterous community, and it rewards that patience with one of the few genuinely breedable, parental-care spawns among the smaller characins. This article keeps its scale honest — a fish that tops out under six centimetres, not a piranha-family giant, and one whose needs are the opposite of a generalist community tetra.

Taxonomy & naming

Crenuchus spilurus was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1863 and remains the only species placed in the genus Crenuchus, which in turn gives its name to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters. The family also contains the genus Poecilocharax, a similarly nano-sized, cave-spawning relative, and the far larger, more diverse Characidiinae (the stream-bed darters, genus Characidium and allies), which behave more like true benthic darters than open-water tetras. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference for the currently valid genus and family placement.

Crenuchidae was for many years grouped loosely with the tetras (Characidae) in older aquarium literature, and Crenuchus spilurus is still occasionally sold under the trade name "sailfin tetra" even though it is not a true Characidae tetra. The species epithet spilurus derives from Greek roots referring to a spotted or marked tail, describing the dark caudal-region marking seen on the fish.

Morphology

Crenuchus spilurus is a small fish — FishBase records a maximum published length of 2 in total length — with an elongated, slightly compressed body built for perching on wood and leaf litter rather than sustained open-water swimming. The species shows pronounced sexual dimorphism in fin development: mature males carry dramatically extended, sail-like dorsal and anal fins, often edged in white or yellow with rows of iridescent spots, while females have proportionally shorter, rounder fins and a plumper body outline.

Both sexes show an iridescent, spangled pattern of gold, green and blue-green spots across the flanks that intensifies under good blackwater conditions and subdued lighting, along with the dark tail-region marking referenced in the species name. Coloration and fin extension in males are strongly influenced by condition, water quality and social status within a group, with dominant, well-conditioned males displaying the most exaggerated finnage.

Habitat

Crenuchus spilurus is native to the Orinoco and Amazon river basins and to coastal rivers of the Guianas, occupying slow-flowing, often heavily shaded forest streams and blackwater or tea-stained tributaries typical of these drainages. FishBase gives a native pH range of roughly 5.5–6.5 in tropical conditions around 75–82 °F, while Seriously Fish reports a broader observed range of pH 4.0–6.5 and temperatures of 68–82 °F with soft water (roughly 18–90 ppm hardness) — consistent with the soft, acidic, tannin-stained forest-stream water typical of much of its range, though not uniformly extreme blackwater everywhere it occurs.

Within these streams the species is a solitary, territorial bottom- and mid-water percher rather than a schooling fish, typically found resting on or near submerged wood, root tangles and leaf litter, darting out briefly to feed or defend a perch before returning to cover — the dart-and-rest behaviour that gives the family its common name.

Feeding

Crenuchus spilurus is a micro-predator. FishBase and Seriously Fish both document a wild diet dominated by small invertebrates — mayfly (Ephemeroptera) larvae, copepods and ostracods — rather than plant material or general detritus, and the species is frequently reported to ignore dry flake food entirely, or to accept it only reluctantly once well settled.

In the aquarium, keepers should offer small live or frozen foods as the staple: brine shrimp nauplii, Daphnia, Moina and grindal worms are all cited as reliable acceptance items, with frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp also taken. Some hobby sources note that well-established individuals can be coaxed onto quality flakes or micro-pellets over time, but a diet built around small live/frozen invertebrate foods more closely matches both the documented wild diet and the fish's evident preferences.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Crenuchus spilurus is pronounced and reliable: mature males develop the elongated, sail-like dorsal and anal fins described above along with more intense iridescent spangling, while females remain shorter-finned and rounder-bodied, making pairs straightforward to distinguish once fish approach maturity. Males are described as nuptially territorial, defending a chosen cave or sheltered spot against rivals, though multiple hobby sources characterise this territoriality as rarely escalating to serious harm — a species that postures and displays more than it fights.

Conditioning ahead of spawning follows the pattern typical of small blackwater characins: soft, warm, slightly acidic water and a steady supply of small live foods bring females into breeding condition and intensify male colour and fin display.

Breeding

Crenuchus spilurus is a cave or leaf-litter spawner with genuine, if brief, monoparental male care — one of the more reliably breedable spawning modes among the smaller South American characins. FishBase describes roughly 100 eggs deposited on a chosen substrate surface, after which the male disperses and guards the clutch; Seriously Fish similarly reports the male guarding the eggs in or near a cave site for approximately 36–48 hours until they hatch, with fry becoming free-swimming a further four to six days later.

Once fry are free-swimming, parental care ends and they should be treated as any other tiny characin fry: newly-hatched brine shrimp nauplii or microworms are the standard first foods cited across hobby sources. The short guarding window and small clutch size mean this is a nano-scale breeding project rather than a high-volume spawn, but it is a genuinely achievable one for a patient keeper with a dedicated species tank.

In the aquarium

Crenuchus spilurus is a shy, slow-moving nano fish that does best away from boisterous community tankmates. A minimum aquarium of around 25 US gal (roughly a 75×12 in footprint) is cited as a workable base for a small group, furnished with driftwood, leaf litter and dense planting or floating cover to recreate the shaded forest-stream perches the species relies on in the wild; dim lighting and subdued water movement suit it better than a bright, high-flow community setup. Because males hold loose territories around favoured perches, provide multiple sheltered spots — caves, wood tangles or leaf-litter patches — to spread that territoriality across the tank rather than concentrating conflict on a single site.

Tankmates should be chosen for calm temperament and a similarly unhurried pace; fast, nippy or aggressive community fish will out-compete this species at feeding time and stress an already timid fish. A species tank or a very quiet, soft-water nano community is the safest route to seeing the male's full finnage and colour on display. Diet must be actively managed, as noted above — this is not a fish that will thrive on flake alone.

Conservation

Crenuchus spilurus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with the most recent evaluation dated 19 October 2020, reflecting its wide distribution across the Orinoco and Amazon basins and Guianan coastal drainages and the absence of documented range-wide population decline. The species is not a target of large-scale commercial fisheries, and its presence in the aquarium trade draws on a wide native range rather than a narrow, vulnerable endemic population.

As with many small forest-stream characins across Amazonia, Orinoquia and the Guianas, the broader long-term pressures on its habitat are deforestation, water-quality change and hydrological disruption from damming and land-use change, even though the species itself is not currently classified as threatened.
