Taxonomy & naming
Apareiodon orinocensis was described in 1999 by Bonilla, Machado-Allison, Silvera, Chernoff, López and Lasso, in the paper "Apareiodón orinocensis, una nueva especie de pez de agua dulce (Pisces: Characiformes: Parodontidae)," published in Acta Biologica Venezuelica. The type material was collected from the Caura and Orinoco river drainages in Venezuela, which remain the species' documented range. It belongs to the family Parodontidae, a small Neotropical family of roughly 29 valid species across three genera, distributed through the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná systems, and diagnosed in part by a distinctive scraping dentition adapted for grazing algae from hard substrate rather than seizing prey.
Some subsequent authors have referred this species to the related genus Parodon; this article keeps the original combination, Apareiodon orinocensis, per the description under which it was named. As with several of its congeners, the genus name appears in older literature and trade sources with the spelling variant "Apareiodón" (with an accent, reflecting the original Spanish-language description) or "Apareidon"; these should be read as the same taxon. FishBase does not carry a dedicated summary page for this species at the time of writing, which is consistent with its status as a narrow-range, recently described characin known mainly from the primary literature.
Morphology
No species-specific morphological description or maximum-length figure for Apareiodon orinocensis was found in the sources available for this article. Based on the genus and family, it can be expected to share the parodontid build: a slender, torpedo-shaped body suited to holding position in current, and the family's diagnostic scraping jaw. Parodontidae as a whole spans roughly 4–13.5 in depending on species, but Apareiodon species tend toward the smaller end — the related Apareiodon ibitiensis reaches only 4.5 in SL — so a maximum length under 6 in is a reasonable estimate for A. orinocensis, offered here as an estimate rather than a documented figure.
Genus-level sources describe Apareiodon as lacking dentary (lower-jaw) teeth and bearing a single unbranched pectoral-fin ray, features tied to its grazing habit: the pectoral fins help brace the fish against current while it works algae off rock with the upper jaw. No colour pattern or fin-shape detail specific to this species could be confirmed, and this account does not speculate beyond the genus-level picture.
Habitat
Apareiodon orinocensis is documented from the Caura and Orinoco river basins of Venezuela, its only confirmed range. Parodontidae in general, and Apareiodon in particular, are specialists of rocky- or sandy-bottomed rivers and streams with meaningful current — genus-level sources describe flow rates up to roughly 15.5 in/second in occupied habitat — rather than the still floodplain lagoons and backwaters favoured by many other characins in this section.
No species-specific water-chemistry data were found for A. orinocensis. A related species in the genus, Apareiodon affinis, is documented at 72–79 °F in its cooler, subtropical Río de la Plata range; the equatorial Orinoco and Caura drainages that A. orinocensis inhabits run warmer, and this account estimates roughly 75–82 °F accordingly, consistent with warm, slightly acidic Neotropical river conditions typical of the region — an estimate, not a measured figure for this species.
Feeding
Apareiodon orinocensis is presumed, on genus and family grounds, to be an omnivore/detritivore and algae grazer: Parodontidae use their well-developed pectoral fins to grip river-bottom substrate while lunging at algae and biofilm on rock, feeding chiefly during daylight hours. No diet study specific to this species was found, so this account follows the documented feeding ecology of the genus and family rather than a species-specific source.
In the absence of aquarium-keeping records for A. orinocensis, no feeding regimen specific to the species can be given. Keepers working from the genus pattern established for relatives such as A. affinis would reasonably expect a fish that grazes continuously on algae-rich surfaces and takes vegetable-forward foods, but this is inference from congeners, not a documented account of this species in captivity.
Mating

If ever kept, a fish built on the Apareiodon plan would be expected to need strong current, high oxygenation and hard, algae-productive surfaces to graze — the same requirements documented for the better-known congener A. affinis — rather than the still water, dense cover or large predator-scaled tanks that dominate care advice elsewhere in this atlas section. It is, on everything known of the genus, a small, peaceful grazer rather than anything resembling a piranha or pacu, and there is no indication it poses any risk to plants or tankmates.
Because no specific husbandry record exists for this species, prospective keepers should treat any care regimen as an extrapolation from relatives, not an established protocol, and should not expect to source this fish through the ordinary aquarium trade.
