Taxonomy & naming
Cynodon meionactis was described in 1999 by Jacques Géry, Philippe Le Bail and Philippe Keith, part of a wave of taxonomic work on Guiana Shield freshwater fishes in the late twentieth century. It belongs to the genus Cynodon, one of several "payara" or "vampire fish" genera — alongside the larger-bodied Hydrolycus and Rhaphiodon — placed in the family Cynodontidae within the order Characiformes; older literature sometimes folds these genera into a broader Cynodontinae grouping. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the taxonomic authority followed here, recognises Cynodon meionactis as a valid, distinct species with no outdated genus combination in circulation.
The genus name Cynodon derives from the Greek kyon (dog) and odous (tooth), a direct reference to the canine-like fangs that project from the lower jaw of every species in this predatory lineage. Cynodon meionactis is a Guiana Shield endemic, distinguished from its congeners by scale and fin-ray counts rather than by any dramatic difference in body plan — it shares the family's characteristic long, torpedo-shaped body and underslung, fang-studded jaw.
Morphology
Cynodon meionactis is an elongate, laterally compressed, silvery fish reaching a documented maximum of about 12 in total length — modest by the standards of its family (the payara Hydrolycus scomberoides can exceed 1 metre) but still a substantial predatory fish. The head is proportioned for ambush hunting, with a large eye (roughly 2.9–3.35 times into head length) and a lower jaw armed with two enlarged, fang-like teeth that lock into sockets in the upper jaw when the mouth closes — the family's signature feature and the reason for the common name "vampire fish."
The body is silver and streamlined, with relatively long pectoral fins (around 28–30% of standard length) that help power short, explosive strikes, and a branched anal fin with an unusually high ray count (63–67 branched rays) that runs a long way down the underside of the body. A humeral (shoulder) blotch is present but notably smaller than the eye, a detail used alongside meristic counts to separate this species from its relatives. As in other cynodontids, the skin and scales are thin and easily damaged — a trait that matters enormously for handling and any prospective captive care, discussed further under "In the aquarium."
Habitat
Cynodon meionactis is known from the coastal river systems of French Guiana and Suriname, with confirmed occurrence records from the upper Maroni River — a Guiana Shield drainage that separates the two countries. This is a comparatively narrow range next to some of its wider-ranging relatives, consistent with the pattern of localised endemism seen across many Guiana Shield fish lineages.
As a fast-water, open-channel predator, it is associated with the clear-to-tannin-stained rivers typical of the region rather than still floodplain lakes. Specific published water-chemistry data for this species is sparse; broadly, Guiana Shield rivers of this type run warm and soft to moderately acidic, but no precise temperature or pH range for C. meionactis specifically is documented in the sources reviewed here, so none is asserted.
Feeding
Cynodon meionactis is a piscivore — FishBase explicitly describes it as predatory, and the enlarged fang-like lower-jaw teeth found throughout the genus are a pursuit-and-impale adaptation rather than a grazing or crushing one. Like its relatives, it almost certainly targets other fish in open water, using bursts of speed and a jaw built to seize and hold slippery prey rather than to grind or shred it.
No captive feeding regime is documented for this species specifically, and reliable aquarium accounts are essentially absent (see "In the aquarium"). Related Cynodon and Hydrolycus species in captivity are notoriously reluctant to accept anything but live or freshly killed whole fish, and any keeper working with a fish in this genus should expect the same — this is a genus built around live, moving, appropriately sized fish prey, not flake or pellet feeding.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Cynodon meionactis in the sources available. As with most cynodontids, it is presumed to be a large-river spawner in the wild, but no field or aquaculture account describes pairing, courtship displays, or sexual dimorphism for this species, and none is invented here — this is genuinely undescribed territory for the species.
Breeding
There is no record of Cynodon meionactis being bred in captivity, and no description of its natural spawning behaviour beyond the general expectation — shared with payaras, barracuda characins and other big-river predators in this family — of open-water spawning tied to seasonal river cycles rather than nest-building or parental care. Species in this genus and its relatives (Hydrolycus, Rhaphiodon) are essentially unknown from home aquaria, let alone bred there; there is no commercial or hobbyist breeding program for this fish.
Given the complete absence of data, the honest statement is simply that captive breeding of C. meionactis is not established and no aquarium spawning has been reported.
In the aquarium
Cynodon meionactis is not a practical aquarium fish. At up to 12 in it is a genuinely large, fast, open-water predator, and like every cynodontid it carries thin, delicate skin that splits easily against glass or hard décor during the panicked dashes these fish are prone to when startled — a well-documented problem in the handful of payara and vampire-fish species that have been kept in very large public-aquarium systems. No dedicated aquarium care profile for this species exists in the literature reviewed; the related payara, Hydrolycus, is occasionally kept only in enormous, obstacle-free public-aquarium tanks with careful acclimation, and even there it is considered a difficult, fragile fish.
Any tankmates would need to be far too large to be seen as prey, and the tank itself would need to be exceptionally long and free of hard structure to prevent the fish injuring itself in flight response — requirements well beyond any home setup. This species is best regarded as a wild river predator that does not belong in the aquarium trade, rather than as an aspirational "advanced keeper" fish.
Conservation
Cynodon meionactis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, consistent with a Guiana Shield endemic occupying relatively intact river habitat in French Guiana and Suriname without evidence of significant population decline. It is not a target of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure from hobbyist demand is not a relevant threat.
As with other Guiana Shield freshwater fish, longer-term watch items for the region include mining-related sedimentation and mercury contamination and any future hydroelectric development on the Maroni and neighbouring drainages, though no specific threat assessment for this species beyond its Least Concern status is documented in the sources reviewed.
