Taxonomy & naming
Cynodon septenarius was described by Mônica Toledo-Piza in 2000 as part of a revision separating the species within the genus Cynodon, a group long confused in the literature under names such as C. gibbus. It belongs to the family Cynodontidae — the payaras, vampire tetras and pike characins — within the order Characiformes, a family that Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats as distinct from the larger Serrasalmidae (piranhas and pacus), though both sit within the broader characin radiation of large-river Neotropical predators.
The genus Cynodon is smaller and less publicised than its close relative Hydrolycus, the true payara, but shares the same basic body plan and hunting strategy. Cynodon septenarius is distinguished from its congeners by details of fin-ray and scale counts described in Toledo-Piza's revision; as with much of this family, field identification to species level is difficult and the group is often sold in the aquarium trade under informal names for the genus rather than the individual species.
Morphology
Cynodon septenarius has the classic pike-characin build: an elongated, laterally compressed, silvery body built for short bursts of speed, a pointed head and a lower jaw armed with prominent, forward-projecting fangs that give the whole family its "vampire" reputation. FishBase records a maximum length of 12.5 in standard length, making it a comparatively modest member of the group next to the meter-long Hydrolycus payaras, though it is still a substantial predatory fish by aquarium standards.
As in other Cynodontidae, the skin and scales are thin and easily damaged, and the fish is a nervous, high-strung swimmer that startles readily — a trait tied directly to a fragile physiology built for open water rather than confined spaces. Colouration is a simple, functional silver overall, consistent with a pelagic fish that relies on flash camouflage rather than pattern.
Habitat
The species occurs in the Amazon and upper Orinoco River basins, with records from the Rio Negro, Rio Branco, Rio Trombetas and Rio Tapajós in Brazil and the Essequibo basin in Guyana; the type locality is the Rio Tefé in Amazonas, Brazil. It is a pelagic, open-water fish of large tropical rivers rather than a still-water or heavily vegetated specialist, though relatives in the genus are noted using vegetated margins and flooded river areas as hunting grounds during high water.
Water across this range is warm and well-oxygenated, consistent with a fast-swimming pursuit predator that needs strong current and open water to hunt effectively rather than the dense cover and slack water some other characins favour.
Feeding
Cynodon septenarius is an obligate piscivore — a generalised fish-eater that pursues and engulfs other fish rather than scavenging or grazing. Newly imported wild specimens typically refuse anything but live fish at first and must be weaned carefully onto dead alternatives such as strips of fish or prawn; feeder fish should be avoided because of the disease risk they carry rather than any objection to live food itself. Mammalian or avian meat (beef heart and similar) is not appropriate and should be avoided.
In a captive setting the practical implication is stark: any tankmate small enough to fit in the mouth is a meal, not a companion, and feeding management has to account for a fish that may initially refuse prepared foods entirely.
Mating
Data are sparse. No courtship behaviour, pairing, or spawning trigger has been documented for Cynodon septenarius in the cache sources, and the wider payara/pike-characin group is understood to be a big-river, long-distance spawner rather than a fish that pairs off and displays in the way many aquarium characins do. Nothing reliable can be said here beyond that absence of data — it should not be assumed to resemble the courtship of piranhas or tetras.
Breeding
As with the rest of the payara, barracuda and pike-characin group, Cynodon septenarius is essentially not bred in captivity. These are big-river spawners believed to migrate and release eggs into open water under conditions that have not been replicated in aquaria or, as far as the available sources show, in aquaculture. No spawning mode, egg type, or parental-care pattern has been documented for this species, and it should not be assumed to nest-guard like a piranha or scatter eggs over plants like a silver dollar.
Honestly stated: captive breeding of C. septenarius is not established, and virtually all specimens reaching the aquarium trade are wild-collected.
In the aquarium
Cynodon septenarius is not a beginner fish and is a poor fit for most home aquaria. At up to roughly 12 in it needs a long, open tank with plenty of swimming room and minimal obstruction — the fragile skin and panicky temperament of this family mean a startled fish can split its snout or injure itself against glass or decor in a cramped or cluttered setup. Strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen are important given its origin in fast, open river water.
Diet management is the other major hurdle: freshly imported fish often accept only live fish and must be patiently weaned onto dead foods, and any tankmate must be too large for it to swallow — this is a solitary-hunting predator, not a shoaling fish, and should not be kept with anything it can engulf. Given the size, temperament and feeding demands, this species is best regarded as a specialist or public-aquarium fish rather than a community or even typical predatory-fish-tank resident.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cynodon septenarius as Least Concern, reflecting its wide distribution across the Amazon and upper Orinoco basins and the absence of documented major threats. It is not a significant target of the aquarium trade at any commercial scale, and specific population data or pressures tied to particular river systems are not available in current sources — its conservation picture rests mainly on the breadth of its natural range rather than targeted survey data.
