Hemiodus huraulti was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1964. It belongs to the genus Hemiodus within the family Hemiodontidae — a group of characiform fishes sometimes still referred to informally under the older, broader family concept Hemiodidae — placed in the order Characiformes alongside the tetras, piranhas and pacus. Hemiodus is a genus of roughly two dozen described species distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco and Guiana Shield drainages, most of them slender, silver, mid-water schooling fish that are easily confused with one another and with similarly built curimatids and characids in the field. Because it is not established in the trade, any specimens encountered are most likely wild-collected rather than captive-bred.
