Taxonomy & naming
Cyphocharax caboclo was described in 2022 by Melo, Tencatt & Oliveira as part of a phylogenetic revision that resolved the Cyphocharax saladensis species complex, a cluster of very similar small curimatids from central South America. The holotype, catalogued as MNRJ 52506, measures 2.5 in standard length and was collected from the Rio Correntes, a tributary system near Itiquira, Mato Grosso, Brazil, in the upper Rio Paraguai basin; the paratype series spans 1.5–2.5 in SL. The species belongs to the genus Cyphocharax within the family Curimatidae, the toothless characins, a lineage placed near the base of Characiformes and defined largely by the loss of jaw teeth in favour of a highly modified, tooth-bearing pharyngeal apparatus used to process algae and organic sediment.
The specific epithet caboclo derives from the Tupi word caaboc, meaning roughly "the one removed from the woods" or "from the forest" — the term used in Brazil for rural, often mixed-heritage river and forest dwellers. The authors chose it to reflect the fish's upland, forest-tributary habitat rather than any physical trait. As a species named in 2022, C. caboclo has not accumulated the taxonomic synonymy or trade-name confusion typical of older, widely distributed characins; the description is recent enough that the genus placement is not in dispute, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the current combination.
Morphology
Cyphocharax caboclo is diagnosed from its close relatives in the C. saladensis clade chiefly by colour pattern: a thin, dark longitudinal stripe runs along the flank, accompanied by variable dark blotches concentrated on the caudal peduncle, rather than the more uniform or differently patterned markings of its congeners. Like other curimatids it has a small, subterminal, toothless mouth adapted for grazing rather than grasping, a moderately compressed, fusiform body, and the generally silvery, unremarkable base colouration typical of small detritivorous characins.
The type series places adult size firmly in the small-characin range: 1.5–2.5 in standard length, roughly 1.7–2.6 inches, with the holotype at 2.5 in. This is consistent with the broader genus, in which most species are compact fish under 4 in; there is no indication in the description of pronounced size variation beyond this range.
Habitat
The type locality is the Rio Correntes near Itiquira, Mato Grosso, Brazil — an upland tributary system within the upper Rio Paraguai basin, well above the vast, better-known Pantanal floodplain that the Paraguai feeds downstream. This places C. caboclo in headwater or upper-tributary habitat rather than the slow, vegetated floodplain lakes and swamps more typically associated with the wider Cyphocharax genus, several of whose species are documented from exactly that kind of still, plant-choked water.

Given the genus and the general character of upper Rio Paraguai tributaries, warm, soft-to-neutral Neotropical stream conditions are a reasonable expectation, but this should be treated as an inference from the wider group rather than a documented fact for this specific species.

Curimatidae as a family lack jaw teeth entirely and instead rely on a specialised pharyngeal-tooth apparatus to process fine organic material; the group is characterised as detritivorous and algivorous, grazing biofilm, algae and sediment-bound organic matter rather than hunting or browsing on plant tissue directly.
