Cyphocharax aspilos is a small, plainly built characin from the tributaries feeding Lake Maracaibo in northwestern South America, and it belongs to a genus that could hardly be less like the piranhas and pacus it shares this atlas section with. Cyphocharax is one of the "minor characins" — a curimatid detritus-grazer built for sifting fine organic sediment from swamps and river margins rather than for hunting or stripping vegetation. It reaches a modest 7 in standard length, carries no dramatic colour pattern, and has essentially no documented aquarium history; what is known about it comes almost entirely from taxonomic and distributional work rather than from the hobby. The genus Cyphocharax is one of several curimatid genera (alongside Curimata, Steindachnerina and others) recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) as the current, valid placement for these deep-bodied, toothless-jawed grazers.
