Taxonomy & naming
Cyphocharax albula was originally described as Curimatus albula by the Danish ichthyologist Christian Frederik Lütken in 1874, based on material from the Rio São Francisco basin in Brazil. For decades the name languished in synonymy, overshadowed by the later-described Cyphocharax lundi (Dutra, Penido, Mello & Pessali), which was widely treated as the valid name for the same fish. A 2017 taxonomic revision published in Zootaxa re-examined the type material and resurrected Curimatus albula — now placed in the genus Cyphocharax — as the senior synonym, meaning C. albula has priority over C. lundi under the rules of zoological nomenclature. The lectotype (held at ZMUC, the Natural History Museum of Denmark) measures 3 in standard length; the holotype of the now-junior synonym C. lundi measured 3 in SL.
Cyphocharax belongs to the family Curimatidae, a large group of toothless, detritivorous characins often referred to collectively as "curimatas." The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for this name; anyone encountering the species under the name Cyphocharax lundi in older hobby or scientific literature is looking at the same fish under its junior synonym.
Morphology
Like other curimatids, Cyphocharax albula lacks jaw teeth entirely — a family-defining trait tied to its detritivorous lifestyle — and instead relies on small pharyngeal teeth deeper in the throat to process food. The body is a compact, moderately compressed characin shape typical of small curimatids: silvery overall, with none of the deep-bodied, laterally flattened profile of a piranha or pacu.
The documented size for this species is modest. The type specimens on which the current description rests are both under 3 in standard length (roughly 3 in), and no larger maximum size has been reported in the literature reviewed here. This is consistent with Cyphocharax generally, a genus of small-to-modest curimatids rather than the large migratory grazers seen in relatives like Prochilodus.
Habitat
Cyphocharax albula is known from the type locality of Ribeirão da Mata at Lagoa Santa, a tributary of the Rio das Velhas, itself part of the Rio São Francisco basin in Brazil — placing this species firmly within a single major Brazilian river system rather than the broad, multi-basin ranges seen in widespread South American characins.
Curitmatids as a family are associated with slow-moving water — lakes, swamps, backwaters and gently flowing river reaches — rather than fast, oxygenated riffles, and there is no reason from the available sources to expect otherwise here. Specific water chemistry data (temperature, pH) for wild C. albula populations was not found in the sources consulted for this account, and none is asserted.
Feeding
