Cyphocharax gouldingi was described by Richard P. Vari in 1992, part of his broader revision of the family Curimatidae. It belongs to the order Characiformes and sits in Curimatidae — the curimatas — a family of small to medium, toothless or nearly toothless characins built for grazing rather than predation, distinct from the large-jawed, tooth-bearing lineages like the piranhas (Serrasalmidae) that dominate the popular image of Neotropical characins. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Cyphocharax as the valid genus for this species, with no older or superseded generic combination on record.
The species epithet honours Michael Goulding, the American tropical ecologist whose decades of fieldwork on Amazonian fish ecology and floodplain dynamics have shaped much of what is known about fish like this one. Cyphocharax gouldingi is one of dozens of superficially similar Cyphocharax species scattered across South America, and field identification within the genus typically rests on fine details of scale counts, fin-ray formulas and body proportions rather than anything visible at a glance.
Morphology
Cyphocharax gouldingi is a small, laterally compressed, silvery characin with the generalized, streamlined body plan typical of Curimatidae — built for steady cruising and bottom-grazing rather than bursts of speed or predation. FishBase records a maximum size of 6 in total length, a modest figure that places it firmly among the smaller members of its broader characin order.
Like other curimatids, it lacks the conspicuous dentition that defines its more famous relatives; the mouth is small, subterminal or slightly underslung, and adapted for picking and scooping fine material from the substrate rather than biting prey. Colouration is unremarkable — a silvery body typical of open-water and midwater Amazonian characins — and, as with most Curimatidae, there is no documented distinctive pattern or ornamentation that would make this species stand out from its many congeners in the field.
Habitat
The known range of Cyphocharax gouldingi covers the Rio Cupixi (a tributary of the Rio Araguari), the Rio Capim, the lower Rio Tocantins and the lower Rio Xingu — including the Volta Grande stretch — across the Brazilian states of Amapá and Pará, with a further record from the Yasuni River in eastern Ecuador. The type locality is on the road to Serra Navio, on the Rio Cupixi.
These are lowland Amazon tributary and floodplain systems, generally warm and soft to slightly acidic, consistent with the wider Curimatidae pattern of river-channel and floodplain-lake habitat rather than fast, rocky headwaters. No extreme blackwater conditions are documented for this species specifically; the cache and available records point to typical warm, soft, mildly acidic Neotropical lowland river water rather than anything more extreme.
Feeding
Cyphocharax gouldingi is an omnivorous detritivore, consistent with the feeding ecology documented across the genus. Curimatidae in general — and Cyphocharax specifically — swim close to the substrate, scooping mouthfuls of sediment and sifting out diatoms, desmids, filamentous algae and aufwuchs (the biofilm layer coating submerged wood, roots and leaf litter), along with decaying organic matter.
This grazing strategy places the species among the Amazon's quiet ecological workhorses: rather than hunting or competing directly for food with predatory characins, curimatids process the fine organic material that settles on riverbeds and floodplain sediments, a role shared with the related Prochilodus and Semaprochilodus, though on a far smaller, non-migratory scale. There is no evidence of Cyphocharax gouldingi taking live prey, plant material, or anything beyond this detritus-and-biofilm diet.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Cyphocharax gouldingi in the sources available. Data on reproduction in this species is sparse, and nothing should be inferred beyond what related Curimatidae are known to do.
The better-studied congener Cyphocharax abramoides has been recorded spawning multiple times per year in floodplain and river habitats, with a peak tied to the seasonal rainy period — a pattern broadly typical of Amazonian floodplain characins whose reproduction tracks the flood pulse. Whether Cyphocharax gouldingi follows the same seasonal pattern has not been confirmed, and no distinct courtship display or pairing behaviour is recorded for this species.
Breeding
There is no documented breeding record for Cyphocharax gouldingi in captivity, and the species has no established presence in the aquarium hobby or in commercial aquaculture. Based on the pattern seen in the related C. abramoides and in floodplain-dwelling Curimatidae generally, reproduction likely involves open-water egg-scattering timed to the seasonal rise in river levels, with no parental care — but this has not been confirmed for gouldingi itself, and it should be treated as an inference from relatives rather than an established fact.
Given the complete absence of aquarium or hatchery data, prospective keepers and researchers should treat this species' reproductive biology as essentially unknown in practice, distinct from the well-documented nest-guarding of true piranhas or the hormone-induced hatchery spawning of migratory food characins like Prochilodus.
In the aquarium
Cyphocharax gouldingi is not a fish encountered in the aquarium trade; it has no established hobby presence, no care history, and no common name in circulation. Any care recommendations would be extrapolated from the wider curimatid pattern — a peaceful, shoaling, bottom-grazing characin that would need a group, a soft sediment or fine substrate to forage over, and stable, warm, soft-to-neutral water — rather than drawn from direct experience with this species.
Unlike the piranhas and silver dollars covered elsewhere in this group, there is no size-trap, aggression risk or plant-shredding behaviour to warn about here: at under 6.5 in and with a detritivorous diet, Cyphocharax gouldingi poses none of the outgrowing-the-tank or destructive-feeding problems associated with its larger Serrasalmidae relatives. The honest summary for a prospective keeper is simply that this species is not currently available or documented in the hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cyphocharax gouldingi as Least Concern on 15 June 2020. No specific threats are documented for the species, and its range across the Rio Cupixi, Rio Capim, lower Tocantins and lower Xingu in Brazil, plus the Yasuni River in Ecuador, appears stable, with no population data suggesting decline.
As a small, non-commercial, non-aquarium-trade species with a range spanning multiple river systems rather than a single isolated water body, Cyphocharax gouldingi is not a conservation priority at present. Its long-term outlook is nonetheless tied to the broader pressures facing Amazonian tributaries — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change — that affect many of the smaller, lesser-studied characins sharing its range, even though none of these threats are currently documented as impacting this species specifically.
