Cyphocharax oenas is a small, unassuming grazer from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela — a fish that will never headline a piranha documentary or blow up a tank of plants, and that is precisely the point. It belongs to the curimatids, a large Neotropical family of detritivorous characins that quietly process the sediment and biofilm of South American rivers, and at a maximum recorded length of just 2 in standard length it is one of the smallest members of a genus that runs to roughly 47 described species between southern Costa Rica and the Río de la Plata. In the aquarium it would suit a peaceful, well-planted setup as a small schooling scavenger rather than a display centrepiece; in the wild it is simply one thread in the detritus-processing engine of the central and eastern Orinoco.

Cyphocharax oenas was described by the American ichthyologist Richard P. Vari in 1992, in his comprehensive revision of the genus Cyphocharax Fowler published as Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology no. 529 — the single systematic treatment that put the genus on a modern footing. It belongs to the family Curimatidae, a family of small to medium detritivorous characiforms placed alongside Prochilodontidae and Anostomidae in the broader curimatoid/anostomoid assemblage, within the order Characiformes. Paratype specimens (USNM 235485, ten specimens ranging 1.5–2 in SL) were collected from the Río Orinoco in Venezuela, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Cyphocharax oenas as a valid species within a genus of roughly 47 species.

The species epithet oenas references the Greek word for a dove or pigeon (oenas), which in turn echoes the Spanish paloma — a naming pattern Vari used to nod toward local names or type-locality associations in his Cyphocharax revision. As with many curimatids, C. oenas is a small, visually modest fish that is easily overlooked next to the genus's more heavily traded relatives, and it has essentially no profile in the aquarium hobby under its own name.

Morphology

Cyphocharax oenas is a small, laterally compressed characin with the generalized silvery body plan typical of curimatids — an elongate, moderately deep-bodied fish built for steady midwater-to-bottom foraging rather than speed or ambush.
