Taxonomy & naming
Cyphocharax voga was described by the German naturalist Rudolf Hensel in 1870 (sometimes cited in older literature as 1869) from material collected in southern Brazil. It sits in the family Curimatidae — the curimatas, a large Neotropical group of small-to-medium, toothless or near-toothless detritivorous characiforms — within the broader superfamily that also contains the hemiodontids and prochilodontids referenced by this atlas group. GBIF and FishBase both confirm the authority as (Hensel, 1870) under the currently accepted combination Cyphocharax voga.
The genus Cyphocharax is one of several curimatid genera erected from the historical wastebasket genus Curimatus/Curimata as the family was revised through the twentieth century, and species-level identification within the genus still rests heavily on subtle differences in mouth shape, scale counts and gut morphology rather than obvious external colour pattern. No taxonomic instability affecting this species is noted in the sources consulted; the name and authority used here follow FishBase and GBIF.
Morphology
Cyphocharax voga has the generalised curimatid body plan: a moderately elongated, laterally compressed, silvery fish with a small, subterminal, downturned mouth adapted for grazing rather than grasping prey. FishBase lists a maximum recorded length of 10.5 in total length, making it one of the larger curimatids but still a modest fish by the standards of this atlas group's largest members. Fins are unremarkable — clear to lightly dusky, without the bold ocelli or banding patterns seen in some tetras — and the overall look is that of an unassuming, silvery shoaling fish built for browsing sediment rather than display.
No distinguishing colour markings beyond typical curimatid silvering are documented in the sources reviewed; field identification within the genus is difficult and generally relies on meristic counts and mouth structure rather than pattern.
Habitat
The species occurs in coastal river drainages of Rio Grande do Sul and southern Santa Catarina in Brazil, in Uruguay, in the Buenos Aires region of Argentina, in the La Plata estuary, and through the lower Paraná and Paraguay river basins — a subtropical to warm-temperate swath of South America notably cooler and more seasonal than the equatorial Amazon. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic and potamodromous, meaning it lives near the bottom in the water column and undertakes migrations within river systems rather than to the sea, consistent with the seasonal reproductive movements described below.
Research on foraging ecology places Cyphocharax voga specifically in turbid, shallow lakes and slow reaches of these coastal and floodplain systems, where fine sediment and detritus accumulate. As a subtropical Paraná-Paraguay basin fish, it experiences a wider seasonal temperature swing than most Amazonian characins, and specific pH/hardness figures were not captured in the sources reviewed for this article.
Feeding
Cyphocharax voga is a classic curimatid detritivore. Mating
Reproductive biology work on Cyphocharax voga (SciELO Brazil) documents a clearly seasonal reproductive period running from early winter through the end of spring, consistent with a subtropical, temperature-driven breeding cycle rather than the flood-pulse timing typical of equatorial Amazonian characins. Size at first maturity was recorded at approximately 5 in for males and 5 in for females, and average absolute fecundity was measured at roughly 36,608 oocytes per female — a substantial number typical of an egg-scattering, non-guarding strategy.
No external sexual dimorphism beyond relative body size and gonadal condition at maturity is documented in the sources reviewed; the cited study notes the species is responsive to hormonal induction in a research/aquaculture setting, which points toward a natural spawning behaviour that is not easily triggered or observed in a home aquarium.
Breeding
The same reproductive-biology research explicitly notes that Cyphocharax voga is not common in aquaria but is reproducible under management — language consistent with a fish bred mainly in research or aquaculture contexts using hormonal induction, rather than one that spawns readily in a home tank. Given its seasonal, winter-to-spring reproductive period and its status as a schooling, sediment-grazing curimatid, the species most plausibly follows the broadcast-spawning, egg-scattering pattern typical of curimatids and related minor characins, with no parental care after eggs are released — but this atlas has not found a source describing the act of spawning (courtship display, egg-scattering site, exact clutch behaviour) in this species specifically, so that detail should be treated as unconfirmed rather than stated as fact.
For the home aquarist, the honest summary is that Cyphocharax voga is essentially not a hobby-bred fish: what reproductive data exists comes from fisheries and aquaculture research using hormonal induction, not from aquarium spawning reports.
In the aquarium
Cyphocharax voga is not established in the aquarium trade and none of the sources reviewed for this article describe it as an available ornamental fish; its natural history — subtropical coastal river and floodplain-lake habitat, a benthic detritivorous diet, and a modest maximum size of 10.5 in — would suit a large, unheated-to-mild-temperature community setup for algae/detritus grazing rather than a typical tropical show tank, but no husbandry or tank-size guidance specific to this species was found and none should be assumed.
Any keeper who does encounter this species (most likely through specialist South American or biotope-focused importers) should plan for a shoaling fish that needs sediment and biofilm to graze, room to reach a genuinely sub-adult-to-adult size well beyond many tetras, and cooler, more seasonal water than a typical equatorial Amazon setup — closer to the conditions of the lower Paraná-Paraguay system than a heated blackwater tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cyphocharax voga as Least Concern, an assessment dated 2009, reflecting its wide distribution across coastal river systems of southern Brazil, Uruguay, the Buenos Aires region of Argentina, the La Plata estuary and the lower Paraná-Paraguay basins, and the absence of evidence for significant population decline. It is not a species targeted by the aquarium trade and does not appear to face concentrated fishing or collection pressure in the sources reviewed.
As with many fish of the heavily modified Paraná-Paraguay-La Plata system, the general long-term pressures on the basin — damming, water-quality change, and habitat modification of floodplain lakes and coastal rivers — are relevant background context for the species' habitat even though it is not currently classified as threatened.
