Hemiodus iratapuru was described by Francisco Langeani and Cárlison Moreira in 2013, in a paper diagnosing the new species from its congeners on the basis of ectopterygoid (jaw-bone) modifications, tooth form, scale counts, dorsal-fin shape and colour pattern. It belongs to the genus Hemiodus within the family Hemiodontidae, a Neotropical characiform family closely allied to Prochilodontidae and grouped, along with the true piranhas, pacus and silver dollars of Serrasalmidae, under the broader "Piranhas & Pacus" umbrella used on this site for non-tetra characins.
The species epithet iratapuru is taken directly from its type locality, the Rio Iratapuru, a tributary of the Rio Jari in the Amazon basin of Brazil — the river name itself is Tupi-Guarani in origin. As with much of the genus, Hemiodus species are diagnosed on fine anatomical differences that are difficult to see in a live aquarium fish, so field or trade identification of H. iratapuru against its many congeners should be treated cautiously without a verified collection locality.
Morphology
Hemiodus iratapuru has the typical hemiodontid build: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body suited to steady midwater cruising, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth, and the silvery flanks characteristic of the genus.
