Hemiodus argenteus was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1909. It belongs to the genus Hemiodus, a large group of streamlined, silvery characins placed in the family Hemiodontidae — the half-toothed characins, so named because their small, peg-like teeth are largely confined to the upper jaw.
