Taxonomy & naming
Hemiodus goeldii was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1908, in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Vienna. It belongs to the genus Hemiodus, the largest genus in the family Hemiodontidae — the "halftooth" characins, so named because the upper jaw carries a functional row of teeth while the lower jaw is largely toothless, an unusual arrangement among characiforms tied to their grazing, detritus-and-biofilm feeding style.
The species epithet honours Émil (Emílio) Goeldi (1859–1917), the Swiss-born naturalist who directed the Museu Paraense in Belém (now the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi) and authored influential natural history work on the fauna of Brazil; Steindachner's choice reflects the close ties between European ichthyologists of the period and Goeldi's museum as a source of Amazonian specimens. As with many Hemiodus species, identification within the genus rests on fine details of fin pigmentation, scale counts and body proportions, and the group as a whole has a history of taxonomic revision; this account follows the genus placement as Hemiodus, consistent with the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Hemiodus goeldii has the classic hemiodontid build: an elongated, laterally compressed, torpedo-like body built for sustained mid-water swimming rather than burst predation, a small terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth, and a deeply forked tail. Reported sizes run 4.5–6.5 in standard length, placing it toward the smaller-to-moderate end of a genus whose members range from small, slender species to considerably larger, deep-bodied ones exceeding 12 in.
Colouration is typically silvery overall, in keeping with the open-water shoaling habit shared across the genus, with the finer pattern details on the fins and caudal peduncle used to separate H. goeldii from its many congeners. As in most Hemiodus, the upper jaw carries the functional dentition while the lower jaw is essentially toothless, an adaptation suited to grazing algae, biofilm and organic material off submerged surfaces rather than seizing prey.
Habitat
The species is known from the Rio Amapá drainage in the Brazilian Amazon, with its type locality at Cachoeira Grande on the Rio Amapá; more broadly it is associated with Amazon basin river systems. Like other Hemiodus, it is a fish of flowing tropical lowland rivers rather than still water, typically encountered in loose to large shoals moving through open mid-water sections of channel.
Water conditions across the genus run warm and generally soft to neutral, on the acidic-to-neutral side typical of Amazonian rivers — figures cited for related Hemiodus species fall around pH 5.8–7.2 and 73–81 °F. Firm, site-specific water chemistry data for H. goeldii itself is sparse, so these ranges should be read as a genus-level approximation rather than a measured profile for this exact population.
Feeding
Hemiodus goeldii is an omnivorous grazer in the wild, browsing detritus, biofilm and algae from submerged wood, rocks and plant surfaces rather than pursuing live prey — consistent with the genus's characteristic toothless lower jaw and algae-rasping upper dentition. This puts it in the same broad feeding guild as the curimatas and Prochilodus, though on a smaller scale.
In the aquarium it accepts a varied diet of live, frozen and dried foods, but keepers should make sure a meaningful portion of that diet is plant-based — spirulina flake or wafer, blanched vegetables, or algae-based pellets — to mirror its natural grazing habit; a diet skewed too heavily toward meaty foods is a mismatch for a fish built to browse rather than hunt.
Mating
Little is documented about courtship behaviour in Hemiodus goeldii specifically. Related Hemiodus species are reported as open-water egg-scatterers with no pair-bonding or nest-building behaviour, spawning as part of the shoal rather than as isolated pairs, but detailed courtship observations for this genus are thin even in the broader literature, and nothing specific to H. goeldii has been documented in the sources available for this account.
Breeding
Based on related Hemiodus species, H. goeldii is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — eggs are released into open water or over fine vegetation and receive no guarding once laid, unlike the substrate-nesting piranhas or the foam-nest-building African characins elsewhere in this family group. That said, Hemiodus goeldii has not been reported as successfully bred in the home aquarium, and this account should not be read as a confirmed captive-breeding protocol; the fish reaching the trade are believed to be wild-collected or, where farmed, produced by hormone-induced spawning rather than home tank conditioning, as is common practice for many Amazonian characins destined for export.

Hemiodus goeldii is a true shoaling fish and should always be kept in a group — a lone or lightly stocked specimen is a stressed, skittish fish that is prone to bolting and injuring itself against tank glass or décor. Aim for eight or more individuals in as long and open a tank as space allows, since this is a fast, mid-water swimmer that uses horizontal distance rather than vertical cover. At a modest adult size of roughly 6 in, it does not demand the giant footprint that pacus or wolf fish require, but a long tank with strong water movement and open swimming lanes suits its natural behaviour far better than a small, cluttered aquarium.
Water should be kept warm and soft-to-neutral, broadly pH 5.8–7.2 and 73–81 °F, with efficient filtration and good oxygenation reflecting its riverine origin. Décor should combine open swimming space with some driftwood, rockwork or plant cover at the margins for security, along with surfaces that can develop a biofilm/algae layer to graze — a heavily scrubbed, sterile tank does not suit this species' natural feeding habit. Because detailed care reports for this exact species are limited, keepers should treat genus-level Hemiodus husbandry as the working guide and watch the fish's own behaviour closely.
Conservation
Hemiodus goeldii has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status (Not Evaluated). It is known from a limited area of the Amazon basin, centred on the Rio Amapá drainage, and as with many single-region Amazonian characins, there is no dedicated population or threat data available.
