Hemiodus tocantinensis is a slender, silver-flanked shoaling characin described by Francisco Langeani in 1999 from the Rio Tocantins in Brazil, one of roughly forty species in a genus of fast, mid-water "half-toothed" characins named for their unusual jaw arrangement — teeth confined to the upper jaw, the lower jaw toothless. It belongs to the honest, unglamorous side of the Serrasalmidae's characiform relatives: not a piranha, not a giant food fish, just a modestly sized, active river shoaler that grazes algae, biofilm and detritus off submerged wood and stone in the clearwater reaches of the Araguaia-Tocantins system. Reaching only about 6.5 in, it is a fish for a spacious shoal tank rather than a specimen tank, and almost nothing has been documented about its reproduction in captivity — a gap this article is honest about rather than papering over.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemiodus tocantinensis was described by Francisco Langeani in 1999 in Copeia, from material collected in the Rio Tocantins, Brazil — the river that gives the species its epithet. The description separated it from two similar congeners, H. ternetzi and H. thayeria, on the basis of a dark longitudinal stripe running from the eye to the lower lobe of the caudal fin and an oblique dark blotch on the dorsal fin, characters that remain the most practical field marks for identification today.

The genus Hemiodus sits in the family Hemiodontidae, within the characiform assemblage that also contains the pacus, silver dollars and true piranhas of Serrasalmidae, though Hemiodus itself is only a distant relative of those better-known fish. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for the genus's roughly forty valid species, and H. tocantinensis is accepted there as a distinct, currently valid species restricted to the Araguaia-Tocantins drainage rather than a synonym or a locality form of a more widespread relative.

Morphology

Like other Hemiodus, this species has an elongated, fusiform, laterally compressed body built for sustained mid-water swimming rather than the deep-bodied, disc-like profile of its pacu and silver-dollar relatives. FishBase records a maximum size of 6.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller and more manageable characins covered under the Piranhas & Pacus umbrella — a genuinely modest adult size, not a juvenile-tank-trap species.

The diagnostic features are the dark stripe running from the eye back to the lower caudal-fin lobe, an oblique dark blotch on the dorsal fin, and a lateral line carrying 51–58 perforated scales. As in all Hemiodus, the jaw is asymmetric: small teeth are present only in the upper jaw, with the lower jaw functionally toothless, an adaptation tied to the genus's grazing, biofilm- and algae-scraping feeding style rather than to predation.

Habitat

Hemiodus tocantinensis is restricted to the Araguaia and Tocantins river basins in central and northern Brazil, a clearwater system that sits chemically intermediate between the tannin-stained blackwater rivers and the sediment-heavy whitewater rivers more familiar from Amazon aquarium literature. Within that system it is a benthopelagic species, holding in mid-water over rocky and sandy substrate in the main river channel and larger tributaries rather than in flooded forest or still backwaters.

Water chemistry across its native range runs neutral to slightly acidic, consistent with the clearwater character of the Tocantins system, and the species does not appear to require the very soft, strongly acidic blackwater conditions sometimes assumed for Amazonian characins by default. Keepers should treat it as a moderately warm, clearwater river fish rather than reach for extreme blackwater parameters without more specific data.

Feeding

Hemiodus as a genus are grazers rather than predators, and their asymmetric, upper-jaw-only dentition is built for scraping algae, biofilm and fine organic detritus from submerged wood, rock and sediment rather than for seizing prey. Nothing in the available literature on H. tocantinensis specifically contradicts this pattern, and its close relatives are consistently documented as omnivorous grazers with a strong algae/detritus component.

In the aquarium this translates to a diet built around quality algae wafers, spirulina-based flake or pellet, and blanched vegetable matter, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp for variety. As with other Hemiodus shoalers, offering food across the water column and along surfaces rather than relying purely on a single feeding point helps ensure a full group feeds evenly.

Mating

The cached FishBase record notes that Hemiodus tocantinensis is oviparous with "distinct pairing," meaning spawning is understood to involve a paired male and female rather than an open free-for-all among a mixed shoal, but the specific courtship behaviour — colour changes, chasing, site selection — has not been documented for this species. No external sexual dimorphism has been reported for H. tocantinensis in the available sources, and sexing in the hobby, where it is attempted at all, generally relies on body shape (a fuller-bodied, gravid female) rather than any fixed colour or fin difference.

Given how little is documented, this account is deliberately conservative: courtship detail for this particular species is data sparse, and readers should not assume behaviour is identical to better-studied Hemiodus without direct evidence.

Breeding

Breeding of Hemiodus tocantinensis has not been documented in captivity. FishBase records it as oviparous with distinct pairing, and the reasonable inference — based on the reproductive pattern reported for other Hemiodus species — is an egg-scattering mode with no parental care, but this has not been confirmed for H. tocantinensis itself, and this article does not present it as established fact.

In the aquarium

At a modest maximum of around 6.5 in, Hemiodus tocantinensis is a manageable characin for a spacious tank, but it is an active, fast-swimming mid-water shoaler and should always be kept in a proper group rather than as one or two individuals — a lone or sparse Hemiodus is a stressed, skittish fish that will spend its time hiding rather than shoaling naturally in open water. A long tank with strong swimming room, moderate current and open mid-water space, planted or decorated mainly at the margins, suits the species far better than a heavily cluttered aquascape.

Water should be kept clearwater-appropriate: neutral to slightly acidic, moderately warm, with good filtration and flow to mimic its river-channel habitat. It is a peaceful shoaling fish and makes a good community companion for other similarly sized, non-aggressive South American river fish, but it is not a fish for a small or unfiltered tank, and given how little is known about captive breeding, wild or farmed stock availability may vary.

Conservation

Hemiodus tocantinensis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, consistent with FishBase's summary of a 2018 assessment, reflecting a restricted but apparently stable range within the Araguaia-Tocantins system rather than a widespread distribution. As a single-basin endemic, its long-term status is nonetheless tied closely to the health of that specific river system.

The Araguaia-Tocantins basin has been subject to substantial hydroelectric damming and associated habitat alteration in recent decades, pressures that are relevant to river-channel specialists like this species even where a current Least Concern rating shows no immediate threat. No wild-collection or aquarium-trade pressure specific to H. tocantinensis is documented in available sources.
