Hemiodus tucupi is a small, slender-bodied characin described in 2020 from the lower Rio Xingu in Pará, Brazil, one of dozens of Hemiodus species that make up the fast, silvery minor-characin shoalers of Amazonian rivers — a world away from the piranhas and pacus that dominate the family's reputation. It reaches barely 3.5 in standard length, and its pale yellow fins, which give the species its name, are the clearest field mark separating it from its many close relatives in the genus. Almost nothing has been published on its captive husbandry, but the ecology of its congeners, and the Rio Xingu itself, tell most of the story: a fast-water, oxygen-rich river fish that grazes algae and detritus and shoals in numbers for security rather than aggression.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemiodus tucupi was described in 2020 by Silva, Nogueira, Netto-Ferreira, Akama & Dutra in Zootaxa, based on material collected from the Bacajá river system, a Rio Xingu tributary in Pará state, Brazil. It belongs to the family Hemiodontidae within Characiformes, a family of slender, torpedo-shaped Neotropical characins distinct from the deep-bodied Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus and silver dollars) that dominate this atlas group; Hemiodus is the largest genus in the family, with dozens of described species distributed across Amazon, Orinoco and Guiana river systems, many of them difficult to distinguish without close examination of scale counts and fin markings.

The holotype (MPEG 36362) and paratype (INPA 43494) were collected from the Bacajá at rapids of the Igarapé Bacajaí, and the species is diagnosed from its congeners by a combination of a dark longitudinal stripe running from the head to the caudal fin, an oblique dark blotch on the dorsal fin, 9–11 scale rows above the lateral line, 58–66 perforated lateral-line scales and 17–20 circumpeduncular scales. As with much of the genus, field identification without these counts is unreliable, and H. tucupi is best treated as a range-restricted Xingu endemic rather than a widely traded aquarium staple.

Morphology

Hemiodus tucupi is a small, elongate, laterally compressed characin with the characteristic Hemiodus silhouette: a slim, torpedo-like body built for holding position in current, a small terminal mouth, and a forked caudal fin. The largest known specimen (DZSJRP 21378, from Senador José Porfírio) measures 3.5 in standard length (3.5 in), making this one of the smaller members of a genus whose species mostly range from roughly 4–8 in.

The species' name references its most distinctive feature: pale yellow fins that the describing authors likened to the colour of tucupi, the fermented manioc-root juice used in Amazonian cuisine. Body colouration otherwise follows the genus pattern — a silvery flank crossed by a dark longitudinal stripe running from the head to the base of the caudal fin, with an oblique dark blotch on the dorsal fin. These marks, combined with the fin colour and the fine scale and lateral-line counts given in the original description, are what separate it from its many close Hemiodus relatives.

Habitat

Hemiodus tucupi is known only from the lower Rio Xingu basin in Pará, Brazil, including the Rio Iriri, Rio Bacajá and Rio Bacajaí tributaries — the type locality is a set of rapids on the Igarapé Bacajaí. Like other Hemiodus, it is a fish of fast-moving, well-oxygenated river and floodplain water rather than still backwaters, consistent with the rapids and rocky-bottomed stretches typical of the lower Xingu before it meets the Amazon.

Detailed water-chemistry data specific to H. tucupi were not captured in research for this profile; congeneric Hemiodus species from similar Amazonian habitats are documented in water in roughly the pH 5.8–7.2 range with moderate hardness (4–15 dH) and warm tropical temperatures around 73–81 °F, and the lower Xingu's rapids and rocky substrates fit that general profile. The Belo Monte Dam, built on the mainstem Rio Xingu, has altered flow and water dynamics both upstream and downstream of the species' known range, a pressure noted directly in its conservation assessment.

Feeding

Hemiodus as a genus are grazers rather than predators, feeding on algae, biofilm, detritus and fine plant material scraped from submerged rock and wood in the fast water they inhabit, and supplementing this with small invertebrates; species-specific dietary data for H. tucupi were not located, but this omnivorous, detritus-and-algae-leaning pattern is well documented across its closest relatives and is consistent with its small terminal mouth and river-rapids habitat.

In the rare cases where Hemiodus species are kept, congeners take a mixed diet of algae-based foods, vegetable matter and small live, frozen or dried foods readily; there is no reason to expect H. tucupi to differ, though it has essentially no aquarium-trade history to draw on directly.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Hemiodus tucupi, and the cache used for this profile — the original species description, its GBIF record and the IUCN assessment — is silent on reproductive biology beyond confirming the species from wild-collected type material. Sexual dimorphism was not described in the original diagnosis, which is based on meristic counts (scale rows, lateral-line scales) rather than external sex differences, and no dimorphism should be assumed absent further data.

Breeding

There are no published reports of Hemiodus tucupi being bred in captivity, and reports of successful aquarium breeding across the genus Hemiodus as a whole are essentially absent — SeriouslyFish and other hobbyist references covering better-known congeners such as H. gracilis note no reliable captive-breeding record for the genus. Given that H. tucupi is a narrow-range Xingu endemic with no established aquarium presence, its breeding biology in the wild — spawning season, egg type, parental care — is effectively undocumented and should not be guessed at.

Honesty is warranted here rather than a default assumption of open-water egg-scattering: while many characiform relatives are egg-scatterers, this has not been confirmed for H. tucupi specifically, and the species is not currently part of the aquarium trade in any form that would have generated breeding reports.

In the aquarium

Hemiodus tucupi has no meaningful presence in the aquarium hobby — it is a recently described (2020), range-restricted Xingu endemic, and this profile draws on its original taxonomic description and the ecology of better-known Hemiodus congeners rather than any direct husbandry record. Were it ever available, its small adult size (under 4 in) and its genus's known preference for fast-moving, well-oxygenated, current-swept water would point toward a large, well-filtered, current-rich setup with a tight-shoaling group of eight or more individuals, mirroring the guidance given for congeners like H. gracilis; Hemiodus are described as peaceful schooling fish that swim with a distinctive head-down, slanted posture.

Prospective keepers should treat any claims of availability with caution and should not expect this species to be sourced through normal aquarium-trade channels; there is no basis in the available sources for stocking numbers, tank size or diet beyond the general genus pattern above.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hemiodus tucupi as Least Concern. The assessment explicitly weighs the impact of the Belo Monte Dam on the mainstem Rio Xingu — reduced flow downstream and altered hydrology upstream — but notes the species occurs across at least three tributary systems (the Rio Iriri, Rio Bacajá and Rio Bacajaí), only two of which are indirectly affected by the dam, supporting a Least Concern rather than a threatened classification.

As a narrow-range endemic of a single Amazonian sub-basin under active hydrological pressure from major infrastructure, H. tucupi is a reasonable long-term watch species even at Least Concern: further changes to Xingu basin flow, sedimentation or water quality could disproportionately affect a species with no populations documented outside this river system.
